Horse and Carriage Driving Experience in Flat Rock

Atair Acres is holding a carriage driving clinic for horse lovers of all kinds on April 26-27, 2008.  The instructor is the well known international carriage judge Laura Frizzell, formerly of Michigan.Laura was on the forefront of carriage driving when the sport first came to Michigan.  She became a judge and a very popular instructor in Michigan before moving to PA to start her own horse farm and Bed, Barn and Breakfast.  The clinic will include instruction on how to go about training your horse to drive, hitching him to a vehicle, and how to successfully compete in driving shows.  It is open to all breeds of horses and if you do not have a horse, you can audit the classes and learn along with the horse owners themselves.  There is a fee for attending and lesson spots are still available.  For more information and a registration form please contact Chris Allen at:  chris@atairacres.com or call 734-783-5525

I have a question slightly on the subject. When I’m on vacation in a “touristy” spot and they have horse drawn carriage rides should I avoid them? I always feel like if the horse is not well cared for I don’t want to give the guy my money. I’ve read some horror stories about what the Mackinack horses go through as far as poor conditions. But then I think if I take the ride maybe they’ll use my money to care for the horse….what’s the best thing for the animal in that instance?

Mike Rowe of “Dirty Jobs” did a piece on the horses on the Mac Island. They are very well cared for and are in good shape now. I have heard those stories and they must be pretty old as things are fine now.
I am like you. If the animals are starving and in poor shape I avoid them. Hopefully they will go out of business. If they get money it just gives them enough to buy another animal to mistreat. It is very easy to NOT feed two horses. Also a complaint should be filed with the city that regulates them. Enough complaints and their license will be pulled.

I guess I feel that if you use horses or any pet for business they need even more care… I am really on the pet service at Merkle Funeral Service they will pick up horses to for
cremation…. I would like to know if any one ever wanted to have a service for there pet.
