1857 Beer Recipe
January 5, 2008
During my research of Monroe Breweries, I found this beer recipe from a 1857 Monroe newspaper. If you need any more proof that we are in the golden age of brewing here it is. Nowadays you can make any beer style you like and the recipes are available with the click of a mouse. You also have some great books to get you either initially through your first brewing experience or to teach you how to develop your own beers. Home-brew shops like Adventures in Homebrewing or Winery Supply Company and River Raisin Brewing Company have top notch ingredients for your brewing needs.
In 1857 things were a little more complicated. Every modern technology we have in our house now is gone. Since your water might not be fit for drinking, you make beer with low alcohol so you can keep your kids hydrated. More than likely you can make your own beer but if you didn’t here’s the article that will teach you how. If any more advanced brewers than myself want to try this at home let me know how it turns out.

Actually this seems more like an old timey root beer recipe. Check it out. The ingredients are similar to what I found online for an “old fashioned root beer recipe” http://www.root-beer.org/recipe2.htm.

That makes more sense. I was wondering where the malts were…
