My wife and I went to Grand Haven this weekend to see my parents and celebrate our sons second birthday. Evey time we drive over the bridge from Spring Lake I see this brewery … Old Boys’, but I’ve never gone in until this past weekend. I was skeptical since my dad said he’d been there, but ordered a Bud Light (I quickly scolded him for that … can you image the bartender taking his order - UGH!). My sister who lives in town said she knows friends that go there for bands that play on weekends, but didn’t know they brewed beer … so i went in with unsure expectations…but was very surprised and happy I took the chance.

They offer a regular menu of six beers: A Kolsh, a Wheat, an IPA, a Red, a Brown Ale and a Stout. The day I stopped in they had a Bock on special tap. I ordered a sample and all were solid, good brews. Nothing fancy, no quirky tweaks to the recipe … just good, clean brewing. They were all very similar,.. same yeast or hops in all the beers; I couldn’t place it but they all had a similarity. My favorites were the Bock, the Stout and the Brown Ale. I bought a 32oz of the bock and a 32 oz of the brown ale for you to try. Like i said i always drive by this place and it took me this long to stop in - they’ve been open for 10 years!

There was a blurb about the place in their food menu, which read:
“Old Boy’s Brewhouse, located on the shore of Spring Lake, Michigan, is dedicated to producing only the finest hand-crafted ales using the freshest ingredients. Established in 1997, OBB attributes its canine-oriented theme to the influence and memory of a Chocolate Labrador, ‘Brutus, the Snake Malone,’ AKA Old Boy. Old Boy touched the lives of his family and friends with his gentle demeanor, attentiveness, unique eating habits (catching fish out of the lake, for example), and most of all by his ability to interact with humans.”
The above description makes more sense if you’re in the place … there a pictures of dogs hanging up everywhere - hence “Old Boys’”

Old Boys’ Brewhouse, 971 W. Savidge in Spring Lake, MI, is celebrating 10 years of craft brewing in west Michigan. They have a full kitchen and offer a regular menu of six beers on tap plus a few specialty brews: (they also sell growlers and 32oz bottles to go)
