Leopold Bros. leaving Ann Arbor for Denver, CO
February 8, 2008
If you haven’t heard the news yet, Leopold Bros., a brewer in Ann Arbor, MI is closing it’s doors and heading to Denver, CO. From what the article in The Ann Arbor News says, the two brothers, Todd and Scott Leopold are originally from the Denver area. It sounds like they had a decent run in Ann Arbor, but are heading home to concentrate on the production of their new spirits line.
I can’t say I’ve visited Leopold’s much in the past 5 or so years, but in it’s early days, I was a fan of the place.
Leopold’s was one of the places that opened my mind up to better beers. They used to have movie nights on Wednesdays, where they would pick an actor, and show several movies throughout the evening with him/her in it. We would nestle into the cozy couches they had wrapped around this big t.v. with our pints of beer and watch these flicks. I also dug how they had their place set up like a German drinking hall, with long tables and benches.
I’m not sure I would have been back to the place anytime soon, but it is sad to see an old favorite place leave town.

I’m really not surprised by this. Over the past couple of years their beermaking really went downhill as they began to concentrate more and more on their liqueurs.
The big question is, who will take over that great building once they’re gone!

The “straw” that broke their back was when the landlord decided to triple their rent.
And, yes, the beer has suffered recently, but it hasn’t seemed to slow down the crowds that pack the place late at night.
