“As of six months ago, you could get a majority of hops for around $6 to $10 a pound. Now, most of them are going for $30 to $45 a pound,” said Maumee Bay Brewing Company Brew Master Jonathan Koster.

While the hop shortage is affecting a lot of people (brewers, homebrewers, and beer enthusiasts alike), it is awfully good to see all of this brewing stories coming out of the Toledo press lately…

ha – I was thinking that myself. Actually, I’m going to contact Maumee Bay and try and round up a gathering down there. I’m due for a visit – From our last post on Maumee Bay, someone commented that a new brewer was taking over and had some ideas for new brews. I’m looking forward to trying the beer again. Hopefully they brought back the pizza too!

If only I had some money… I’ve always thought the MBBC was a golden opportunity for someone who focused on the brewpub/brewery. The building has an absolute fantastic atmosphere between downstairs bar area and the upstairs brewery/dining area. They really need to get a consistent and quality-focused brewer (I’ve talked to the former assistant who I believe is now the head brewer, he seemed like a knowledgeable guy), and throw out whoever decided to change their menus around.
As the only “local” brewery in NW Ohio, I think the current management are really wasting a golden opportunity, especially if downtown Toledo can finish its “rebirth” with the new arena. I know from living in the area for almost 10 years now that people are slowly starting to talk about downtown as a place to go for entertainment.

We hit the MBBC at least once a year. I agree with Nate. The atmosphere is very nice. They fixed up the building and kept its old flair. I’d like to see them focus more on their beers than their standard pub fare. It’s hard to mess up a hamburger, but beer deserves more attention.

PS: Our last show focused entirely on hops. We had a nice interview with Ralph Olsen from Hop Union. He explained the reason(s) for the shortage and how long he thinks it will last. We also interviewed Matt Kunzmann on the subject of growing your own hops (as topic of interest to any homebrewers out there). Here’s the link:

In my basement is a fermenting beer called ‘ Shortage, what shortage? ‘ It’s a 1.050 late hopped pale ale with simcoe, amarillo and cascade hops. There is something like 9.5 oz of hops in the batch with 8 oz added in the last twenty minutes of the boil. Its going to be oh so good. Glad we ordered hops as soon as we got wind of the hop shortage.
