Blue Laws

Date July 9, 2008

Todd’s post the other day about laws that hinder breweries is just the tip of the iceberg. Another example of laws that regulate the sale of beer are Blue laws . The purpose of blue laws is to legislate morality. The term is used mainly for laws that ban alcohol which whether we want to admit it or not, some people have a moral problem with imbibing.

One of the stranger blue laws in our state is in Ottawa County. There it is illegal to sell beer on a Sunday. A County that is home to New Holland Brewery. People travel far and wide to visit breweries. Imagine coming from another state to stop by a great brewery like NHB and it’s closed. The Say Yes to Sunday is gathering signatures to change that law. They are having meetings at two locations today to discuss the movement against the law.

Two locations and times:

July  9, 2008; 4 pm – Hampton Inn, Holland, 12427 Felch

July 9, 2008 6 pm — Old Boys Brew House, 971 W. Savidge, Spring Lake

I also recommend checking out their FAQ page at their web-site. Here is a link..

Actually, NHB is open on Sunday - they just can’t sell beer.
You can get spirits that day, which makes no sense at all!

Thank you, I should of wrote that differently. I was trying to say any microbrewery similar to NHB that would be closed because of a dumb law. It is good to see that they are open for business. Eventhough they can’t serve beer.
