Beer Events: September 15th – 21st

Date September 15, 2008

One of the cool events this week is Suds on the River . It takes place on Thursday, September 18th at 6pm. It is being held by the Huron River Watershed Council. The event spotlights the micro-breweries that have their water supplied by the Huron River. Jolly Pumpkin, Arbor Brewing, Grizzly Peak and Wolverine will all be there. Some of the best restaurants in the area will be serving food. Great Lakes Myth Society will supply the music. To purchase tickets contact Margaret Smith at 734-769-5123 x19. Ticket prices are $75 for members and $100 for non members.

It is also a great week for Oktoberfests with the following places having one this week.

September 15th: Sullivan’s Black Forest Oktoberfest 2008 at 7pm, entry will cost $15 for club members and $20 for non-club members. For reservations call 989-652-6060.

September 18th: Champane’s Oktoberfest Beer Tasting runs from 6pm to 8:30pm. Entry will cost $15 per person in advance and $18 at the door. For reservations call 586-268-4900/800-842-1222.

September 18th: Hopcat Oktoberfest runs all day. Yes, I said all day that way you can party like I do on St. Patrick’s Day. You get a dollar off all Oktoberfest beers.

September 18th – 21st: Frankenmuth Oktoberfest  is one of that city’s great parties. I’ll take their World Expo of Beer in May (more MI beer there). Here is a link to their site.

September 19th: Corner Brewery Oktoberfest  starts at 6pm. German food, dancing, drinking and the music by the German band Spass are on tap that evening at the Corner.

September 20th:Kuhnhenn is having an Equinox Party. The highlight of the event is a lightness vs. darkness tasting challenge. I would give you more but their site is being worked on.

The Eastern Market Brewery Tour is one event that I wish I could attend but it is sold out. The website says this is a yearly thing so you may want to keep an eye out for it. Here is the description from their website.

Hear the amazing stories of Eastern Market’s historic breweries! Visit five important brewing sites with guides Pat and Pete Cornils, Detroit-area members of the St. Louis-based Brewery Collectibles Club of America (BCCA). See industrial ruins, adaptive re-use, and new commercial buildings at those sites. After the 90 minute walking tour in the Market area, enjoy a cold Stroh’s, compliments of Preservation Wayne for those 21 and older!
Our big event for this week is to take our daughter Maggie to her first micro-brewery. She has been well behaved at restaurants so far so we figured no problem taking her to a family friendly place like Original Gravity. We hope the lesson learned by her is to support local products. She just has to wait to support her local brewery for another 20 and 25/26ths years.

From Suds on the River website:

“Locally-brewed beers and brew masters from Arbor Brewing, Grizzly Peak, Jolly Pumpkin and Wolverine”

Which one of these is not like the other ones…..

Thanks for bringing that up, jnaz. I drove by a party store yesterday (on Stadium, I think?) and it had a big banner re: Wolverine & I just cringed.

Anyone else going to Oktoberfest at the CB this Friday? If so, I will see you there!

That is why I tried to carefully word the event details.

I want to add one more thing this week. Rumor has it that the OG is releasing their IPA this Tuesday.

I didn’t mean to say that they event wouldn’t be fun. Also I guess it’s a good Premium American Lager like MGD.

Anyone try the Michigan Brewing Co’s Screamin pumpkin ale? I’m an IPA guy but Kevin has been turning me on to some great homemade pumpkin ale.

I tried the Screaming Pumpkin Ale, and all I could think of was how I should have been drinking it in front of a football game. By that I mean, it just totally reminded me of fall. It was just a touch too spicy for me, but I would drink it again (I’m an IPA girl, myself).

Try Southern Tier’s Pumking. A little less spice than Screaming Pumpkin and a lot more pumpkin (and higher in gravity). I’m a recovering hop head, that is my main drink is IPA but I’ve learned to enjoy non-hoppy beer too.

Thanks Dave, I appreciate you adding these events. Good job by me mentioning them on the MI beer scene podcast but not our blog. I need to fire my fact checker and my research assistant and I could be sent my walking papers too.

Does anyone know if Beeks bar is going to host another micro-brewery taste fest?
