Teach A Friend To Homebrew Day – Saturday, November 1st

Date October 23, 2008

I have been interested in homebrewing for a long time.  I picked up some books a couple years ago and began reading through them.  At first, the process seemed a bit intimidating.   Grains, extract, temperature control, sanitation and hops.. all with a different chapters.  And yeast;  the ingredient that makes it all happen, made me a bit nervous.   Yet I continued reading, watching videos, listening to podcasts and talking to people that homebrewed.

What convinced me that basic homebrewing was as easy as boiling water and adding ingredients, was watching someone else do it.   I met Sarah and Kevin last year, and kicked back with them for a brew session.   Finally, it all made sense!

Soon, I had my own equipment (craigslist was a huge help) and turned my garage into a brewery/bar.  The rest is history!    I’ve made some good beers this past year, and I’ve made some so-so beers.  But, I’m always learning and perfecting my techniques.

Picture from 2007 Teach A Friend To Homebrew Day @ Adventures Another event that really helped me advance in homebrewing, was the Teach A Friend To Homebrew Day.  This AHA national event happens every year, on the first Saturday in November.  I went to this last year at Adventures in Homebrewing in Taylor, MI and had a great time.   Not only did I learn a wide range of tricks and techniques, I also had the opportunity to taste several homebrews.  The group of people there last year was a mix of homebrewers and beginners.  The advanced brewers were awesome at explaining their techniques and answering the million questions I had about homebrewing.

I definitely plan on going to this again this year.   If you’re a homebrewer, just starting out or feel it’s something you want to try someday, stop on by.  Homebrewers are some of the friendliest people I’ve met, and I guarentee you’ll have a great time!

Thanks for this post. I am a very novice home brewer. I watch my friends brew, while I drink the last batch. I have been wanting to learn to do it my self. I am going to check it out.

Hey, I watched the video on UTUBE of Kevin and Sarah. I’ve made a few brews but still consider myself a novice beer maker. And as such I’ve always made my brew indoors while my family complains about the smell of the wort (I love the smell of the wort). It never occurred to me to use the turkey fryer outside;…great tip!

Another struggling Monroe beer maker! Ü
