Alternative Ways to Celebrate Christmas

Date December 4, 2008

Homer: “You must love this country more than I love a cold beer on a hot Christmas morning.”

Are you like me and have a love-hate relationship with Christmas? You have the craziness of Black Friday, annoying Christmas songs, finding the perfect gift for people and you have to spend hours to decorate your house for a month. By mid December, you start to think that Christmas deserves to have a war against it. Personally, I have a few things that bother me. What does cutting down a pine tree and dragging it into your house and decorating it have to do with Jesus? I know that it was a tradition usurped from the pagans so who cares if they start naming it a “Holiday Tree.” Then you have the news reports telling all of us we didn’t spend enough money. I just want to get with family and have a good time. If all the stress of the holidays have got you down there are Michigan breweries that are looking out for you.

Below is a list of holiday celebrations going on during the month of December. They are also listed on our calendar.

December (various dates): Fort Street is having “12 beers of Christmas”. Twelve new beers will be released through the month of December.

December 6, Arcadia’s 12th Anniversary Party-”A Highland Christmas”. It’s Christmas in Scotland in Battle Creek. We stopped by last year’s 11th anniversary party on our way back home from the Livery and could not leave. We ended up spending the night in Battle Creek.

December 13, Dark Horse’s The 4 Elf Party is a celebration of the release of DHBC’s popular spiced winter warmer.

December 21 & 22,  Kuhnhenn B.C.’s Winter Solstice Party Get some needed drinking in during the shortest days of the year.

December 23, John Cowley & Sons Beer Tasting in Farmington. Guest Speaker Rex Halfpenny will be discussing Belgian Christmas Beers.

I feel your pain. Christmas is not my holiday, but I can’t avoid it. (And I hate when people call Hanukkah the “Jewish Christmas”…it’s like saying Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Mother’s day just because they fall in the same month). I’ll be tipping up some He’Brew, perhaps :)

I’m planning on visiting Dark Horse for the 4Elf Party. Don’t let the commercial trappings of Christmas bring you down. Go out and celebrate the good things in our lives with friends and local beer!
