Michigan Brewing Co. gets state tax break to make craft beer for musician Kid Rock LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A beermaker in Webberville has gotten a state tax break to create a new craft beer for musician Kid Rock.
The Michigan Brewing Co. plans to invest $7 million in the new product line, which it said will add jobs. On Tuesday, the Michigan Economic Growth Authority approved a nearly $723,00 tax credit over seven years for the company. The village of Webberville also is considering a tax abatement.

Michigan Brewing Co. was started in 1995 and sells nearly 20 kinds of craft beer in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New York, Texas, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Indiana, and Minnesota. It also has begun distilling vodka and other spirits.

Kid Rock, a Michigan native whose real name is Robert J. Ritchie, recently performed at the 51st annual Grammy Awards.

Lansing State Journal has a bit more info on how many jobs this could create:

    R/D1 and R/D2 Lagers
    4.5% Alcohol

Description: Light, clean, refreshing on a Michigan summer’s day, while “singing sweet home Alabama all summer long!”
These two beers are in development for a secret contract. One will ultimately be chosen and named. For whom you ask? We can’t tell you just yet…

Hmmm…is there anyone better to represent our fine state? I applaud the jobs and the money being invested, I really do. But I am not nor have I ever been a fan of Kid Rock (sorry, but when you use your name as a verb (kid rockin’ all around the world), it just isn’t going to work. Unless your name is already a verb, like, er, Rob!). I am not a flaming feminist, but I find his treatment of (in songs, anyway…I don’t know his personal life) and statements towards women very offensive. To put it another way, if someone had the same “songs” about black people, that person would likely never get a beer named for them.

Again though, I can’t argue with good jobs (and good beer). I just wish we could have named it after a true legend–Bob Seger comes to mind–rather than this guy.

    Just MHO and YMMV.

Oh, oops! I just read another article on it and it looks like it’s not being named FOR K.R…okay, I misunderstood that.

I’m still not a fan. I hope I like the beer better!!!! :)

Wasn’t Kid Rock a spokeskid for Coors? After years of swilling Bud?

Never been a huge fan of Kid Rock either, but I pay him some props for choosing to go with a small local Michigan brewery.. (if all this does play out as reported) – rather than picking one of the big boys… who would have gladly picked him up and created (or re-labeled) a beer for him.

Something tells me that Kid Rock’s “demographic” hardly drinks craft beer. The funny thing is that in his songs he mentions Becks, Stoh’s and Heineken. This is just another example of someone getting involved in an industry they have no clue about. I mean come on, he’s trying to use his name to sell craft beer. Clearly from the comments on the LSJ article they are doing it for the love of money, not beer. I bet if you asked this tool what a mash was, he’d tell you its a television show.

Who wants to take bets on how long it’ll be before we see guys with rat-tails on their head drinking craft beer? The over/under is 20 years since that was the last time it was OK to have a rat-tail.

I agree with Pete on this one. The move really doesn’t make much sense and is setup to fail. Are we going to let a recession screw with craft beer? Put money into breweries, great! But not like this!!! it’s a waste. what a bummer.

Some interesting comments here for sure! The first thing I thought of (as did Donna) was Coors. I’ll have a hard time shaking those horrible commercials from my memory!!! That said, people change . . . tastes mature. Bottom line to me: I hope no one is selling out to make a cheap buck here (I believe that thought applies both to Kid and Michigan Brewing).

I would have rather got them to make a beer for Jack White. Still, I want to stick up for Kid Rock. He has a lot of Michigan pride and maybe that played a part of his decision. Sure, he sang about Macros and worse of all made a generation of rock/rap fans believe that Heineken and Yzerman rhymed but maybe he has changed his ways. Imagine the rhymes he could bust using Big Rock Chop House.

I came from a generation where hair bands(Earl Scruggs can out jam all those clowns) ruled. They either came out with a crappy pseudo hard rock songs about groupies or a sappy love ballads about their problems with their girlfriend. I hated that music and it forced my to learn more about other genres and I appreciate when an artist who sounds like he listens to all genres of music. He seems like one of those guys.

uhhhh – let’s be glad he’s not taking all his money and selling out !! Geeez Guys I’m glad to see him putting time and money in his home state. maybe if some of these other people (CEO’s of big corporations) would have put money back in their home states instead of investing globally we wouldn’t be watching the stock market crashing, real estate values plunging, job loss coast to coast. And by the way: whomever it was talkin about his songs; you obviously havn’t listened to ALL of his music – he’s very good. AND if you would ever meet him in person, had a conversation with him, you would see pretty quickly that he is a very very very nice guy! He took time and talked to us when my friend and I met him last year.
yea, to the point of this replly: not a good time to criticize someone putting money back in the USA that creates jobs Hell send him to Kansas I can find alot he could do here!!

  14. Rob said:

We’ll probably make the announcement once it comes out. There hasn’t been any word yet. I’m sure it’s a ways off.. they have to do packaging for it, marketing, etc.

Hey! I’m actually from Webberville, where he plans to make the beer. It’s crazy! We’re just a little bodunk town in the middle of no where, and farming is our main industry here. Glad that we might finally have something spiffy happen!

I like the honesty with which he is producing a lager beer that caters to what his fans drink. I grew up in the Clarkston area where Bob frequents the brewery downtown and local businesses. His kid went to school in Clarkston schools and Pam A. was seen going to PTA meetings – no joke. On many occasions he was sighted sharing a table with young 20-somethings just having a beer and chatting at the Clarkston Union (brewhouse). No entourage. No reservations. All impromptu. This guy is the real deal when it comes to an unabashed rock-n-roller that shows serious pride in this state. When the likes of Martha Reeves are ruining the area with their arrogance, it is great that the Jeff Daniels and Kid Rocks of the world are making Michigan better than it was before. Stop the bashing or leave the state haters.

OMG! I can’t believe how negative people can be, but than again it is only their opinion and you gotta love this country for that opportunity. I will say that I am very proud of Bob, Kid Rock the entertainer for stepping up to the plate to promote a beer. Look, it is the opportunity and K R took advantage just like anyone in this country would do if they could. That’s what is so cool about this country we can be what we want with hard work. I know he is one hell of an entertainer, I caught his show in Pittsburgh on July 7, 2009. Think about the preparation and hard he puts into every show, man that man can perform! So, why is it so bad for him to make an investment on his hard earnings. Look at the jobs people will have at this beer company. This is a part of our Counrty that makes us America and United!!! You go Boy, I’ll buy you a beer someday.
