The State of the State is “Hoppy”
February 3, 2009
I was driving home tonight and I caught a few minutes of Governor Granholm’s “State of the State” address. I have to admit that I was listening, but I wasn’t really LISTENING. Then my ears perked up. Here’s what I heard:
“When I talk to people across Michigan they often ask, “What can I do to help?” Here’s my simple answer: Whenever you can, buy products made or grown in Michigan. There’s no reason we can’t all root for the home team.
Support Michigan. Select Michigan. Buy Michigan. Everything from Ford to Faygo. From Bell’s beer to blueberries. While we may court new investment from outside our state, our first love is the businesses that have long called Michigan home.”
That’s right. Jennifer Granholm gave a shout out to Bell’s! I was so excited I cheered out loud. All alone. In my car.
It’s nice to hear that someone in a position of power GETS it.
Jennifer Granholm…I raise my pint of New Holland Cabin Fever…TO YOU!

That’s so cool!
I remember reading that a very high % (I want to say 80% or more) of MI’s agricultural products are exported and, at the same time, many of the things that are imported from other states can actually be found here in MI. A friend and I were KIDDINGLY talking on Facebook about how Michigan should secede from the union…really, except for citrus, we could grow everything we needed. And we have those nice lakes….

I, too, was alone in my car when she Rang the Bell’s bell- I was so happy.
But then I thought, why not Dark Horse? Or Short’s? Or Atwater? Founder’s? New Holland? Ann Arbor Brewing? Rochester? Keewenaw? Oh, think of the multitude of alliteration fun one can have! So much good Michigan beer! Hiccup! Let’s drink Michigan!
It was a cool moment!

Wind power in Monroe, Animation Studios in Detroit, Digital gaming production in Plymouth, Motown Motion Pictures in Pontiac, and Bell’s beer. Jennifer Granholm
hit a homerun with her optimism about Michigans future. We all must keep drinking
local beer and good things will happen.
