Brewed in Detroit – Book

Date March 16, 2009

I saw a strange post on Craigslist today referring to a tour of C. Pfeiffer Brewing Company. Of course, I emailed the person that posted it asking for more details (which I’ll post if/when I hear back). I googled Pfeiffer Brewing and found a bunch of neat history on the brewery. One of the things I found was a book called “Brewed in Detroit – Breweries & Beers Since 1839,” by Peter H. Blum.

I’ve seen Kevin refer to this book several times in his beer history posts (most recently a post on a Monroe, MI man opening first brewery in Ypsilanti).  I found it on Google Books today and dug through it some, it looks like a great read.  I figured it’s definitely worth another mention.    Here’s an exert from the beginning:

“The brewing of ale and beer in Detroit started in the 1830’s, and large scale operations ended when the Stroh Brewery closed in 1985. During these 150 years, dozens of breweries opened. Some lasted only a few years, while others prospered for several generations. The style and size of breweries changed greatly during the span. Buildings with fancy brickwork and crenellated rooflines replaced more modest structures of simpler design, and were in turn replaced by tall structures with strong verticle lines.”

Google Book: Brewed in Detroit (the entire book is posted, however many of the images are not shown due to copyright)

Amazon link – $39.95 (would make a great coffee table book – I’m anxious to see the pictures)
