Got Shorts!
March 4, 2009
I’ve had this day marked on my calendar for a month now. I’ve been patiently counting down the days until Wednesday, March 4th. I’ve been calling it Shorts Day. No, not the day where I dig my ripped up shorts out of the bottom drawer and my wife comments how I should have thrown those away years ago (though that day is coming..). Today, Shorts Brewing bottles hit southern Michigan.
The last time I had Shorts, I sat at their brewpub smelling my Huma Lupa Licious wondering how the heck they made such good beer. Later that day, I shared a growler of it with some family. One fella, who was around 98 years old at the time (and sadly is no longer with us) took a big sip of the IPA, swallowed and made a puckered up face like he just ate a lemon. “Not bad,” was all he said. He looked at the rest of the sample I gave him and chugged it down.
I thought about my few encounters with Short’s beer as I drove up to Merchant’s in Dearborn. Every beer I’ve had from the brewery has been top notch. I think everyone that has made the trek to Bellaire, MI, all left wishing they could get this beer at their local store.
Today, that wish was granted. I just want to say congratulations to Short’s for making such a kick ass beer and for finally making the jump to share it with those that can’t make it to northern Michigan.
I just took my first gulp of Huma Lupa Licious IPA. Wow. Thank you Short’s, you did good.
Merchant’s – Dearborn, MI has: Bellaire Brown ($9.49 six), Pandemonium Pale Ale ($9.49 six) and Huma Lupa Licious IPA ($11.49 six). They had what looked like about 9 cases of each. We’ve heard they’ll go fast, and they aren’t sure when they’ll get more, so stock up now!

I decided to go for it, and try the Pale and Brown last night too. Both were great!

That’s the locator map they have on their site.

Any idea if Merchant’s was selling singles of these beers? I’m not one to buy an entire sixpack without knowing if I like it first.

Big Ten (I mean Morgan & York) had it on their sign out front today. I didn’t stop in, though.

Yes, you can buy singles of them at Merchant’s. The brown/pale were a buck something a bottle, and the Huma Lupa was $2 a bottle, something like that. I split a six of brown/pale, but mostly just bought sixers of Huma.

I went to Cloverleaf Wine Shop in Royal Oak yesterday and picked up a few singles of the Huma Lupa. You can get singles of the other Shorts brews as well. I was quick to rush home and pour that baby into a pint glass to test. I think Shorts did an excellent job as this tasted as good as I remember it in the Bellaire pub.
