Michigan and Prohibition Articles
September 26, 2009
I am reading old articles this morning while Maggie is napping and I thought
I would share with you some of these with you. They are on Michigan and Prohibition and both tell a little about Monroe’s roll in bootlegging. (for my five Monroe readers)
The first article is a story of bootlegging in Detroit. It is a fascinating article on how illegal booze made it into the state. You can read it at http://apps.detnews.com/apps/history/index.php?id=181.
The second article covers some of the same territory but it tells more on the lead up to Prohibition. It has a blurb on the naming of Temperance Michigan (if I am ever in the position to name a town I would name it DrinkMIbeerburg or HomerJollyPumpkinland). You can read it at http://www.mackinac.org/article.aspx?ID=10016.

A great-grandma of mine was a bootlegger. She made and sold whiskey out of her bathtub. She also was divorced circa 1915 or so, and really, what other jobs were there for women?? I mean, that would have paid like that????

I once heard my Grandpa ran shine up here from Tennesee. I hope it’s true.
