Welcome to the Michigan Beer Buzz blog. This could very well be the first blog from Monroe, MI all about beer. The idea came about while a group of us were sitting around Fort St. Brewing in Lincoln Park, MI. We thought the world needed yet another blog, but ours would be the coolest blog ever. Since we’re all beer nuts, and are always swapping ideas about breweries, beer flavors, tastings, festivals, beer brewing tips, etc., we figured it would benefit the beer community to start keeping track of all this good information!
So far, there will be three of us posting to this blog. We will be recruiting others in the future who share the same passion for craft beer as we do. We definitely aren’t experts in the field, so please help us out. Post comments, send us articles and help us make this the best beer blog ever! We have some really exciting posts coming your way, so sit tight and enjoy Monroe’s first ever blog about beer!

  1. 2nd Annual “Summer Beer Fest” in Detroit’s Campus Martius Park
June 21-22 celebration of Detroit Craft Beer Month to feature 60+ Breweries

In support of Detroit Craft Beer Month, “Summer Beer Fest” will be celebrated in Campus Martius Park on June 21st & June 22nd. Presented by Westborn Market, the 2nd Annual event will be an amazing experience in taste and sound including hot live music, games, and food to compliment over 120 cool brews.
Summer Beer Festival is the promotion of craft beers and the brewers that create them, and over 60 breweries from around the world, across the state and down the street will showcase their unique libations. This event is the perfect opportunity for beer aficionados to discover and taste new brews and special “limited release” beers and ales, and to meet company representatives and brewers responsible for some of their favorite brews.
The event runs from 5-10 pm on Friday June 21 from 5-10pm, and Saturday June 22nd from 2-6pm. Tickets for each day are $45 (2-day pass $70) and include tasting cup, 20 2-oz serving tabs per session, and program guide. Additional servings and food will be available for purchase. “Designated Driver” tickets are available for $10 and must accompany a paid attendee.
On Saturday a limited-quantity VIP session for $70 includes entry into event at 1pm (one hour before general admission), a commemorative tasting glass, 25 2-oz serving tabs and complimentary hors d’oeuvres.
As part of this year’s expanded Beer Fest, attendees can sample unique “firkin” (cask ale) beers, enjoy a stogie in the cigar lounge, marvel at unique side show acts, and even participate in a beer belly contest! Delicious food offerings will be provided by U.P. Pasties Company, Chicken Shack, The Different Twist Pretzel Co., and Jay’s Stuffed Burgers.

Whether you’re a fan of pale ales or pilsners, dark lagers or stouts, there will be a brew for every palate at Summer Beer Fest. From established brands introducing new labels – to small batches brewed specifically for this event – partygoers will have the first taste of the latest malted beverages. Whether a serious beer connoisseur or a weekend warrior – lager lovers will not want to miss Summer Beer Fest!

Advance tickets are now available at Westborn Market (3 metro Detroit locations where advance tickets can be purchased, including Berkley, Dearborn and Livonia) and http://www.detroitsummerbeerfest.com. Summer Beer Fest information including breweries, brands, bands, and cuisine will be continually updated on this site.

Campus Martius Park is located at 800 Woodward Ave in Downtown Detroit.

Editor’s note: Beer Fest representatives are available for interviews.

  3. Hello!
I am pleased to announce the release of Robert A. Musson, MD’s pictorial history book “D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc.” from Arcadia Publishing. With a Foreword written by Dick Yuengling, it was just published on 09/23/2013. This new title connects people to the history of America’s oldest brewery through many previously unpublished vintage images, and tells much of the brewery’s back story. We would be honored to have this new book featured on your blog, Michigan Beer Buzz, to help spread the word about its release! To that end I am happy to set up an author interview, send you a review copy or provide digital images from the book for your promotional use. I’m also happy to forward a press release.

I am from JournalismatWMU.com and I am working on a story about Michigan microbreweries and the state legislation about it. The story will possibly be freelanced to the Western Herald and MLive. I would like to ask you some questions on your thoughts either over the phone or through email. Please let me know by email what works best for you.

Spend the Weekend in Jackson for the
4th Annual Southern Michigan Winter Beer Festival at the Jackson County Fairgrounds

JACKSON, Mich. – February 21, 2014 – The Jackson County Fairgrounds will be hosting the 4th Annual Southern Michigan Winter Beer Festival on Saturday, March 8 from 12 pm – 5 pm in the American 1 Fair Event Center with Welcoming Sponsors Grand River Brewery and Experience Jackson.

The festival will feature more than 150 craft, specialty and import beers. This year the food choices have been expanded to include everything from sausage, brats and kraut, to barbeque, steak hoagies and pretzels. Another new addition for 2014 is an entertainment tent with live music and a corn-hole competition. Event organizers encourage attendees to bundle up because it is an indoor and outdoor event where people can enjoy food on the patio while listening to live music next to a roaring bonfire.

While visiting Jackson, festival-goers can also try craft beer at four new microbreweries, each with its own unique atmosphere. Grand River Marketplace in Downtown Jackson, Bifferhaus Brewing Company on Lansing Avenue, Tootsie’s Brewery at Lone Oak Vineyard Estate in Grass Lake, and Shed’s Brewing Company located off of US-127 are worth a drop-in for visitors interested in making a weekend out of the Beer Festival.

  6. I’m Shawn Grose, owner of Windmill Pointe Brewing with my Brother Aaron. We’re on a mission to bring the next great brewery to Detroit. We’re contacting those that deliver “Beer” news to the State of Michigan and beyond. We’ve kicked off a crowd funding campaign to get us one step closer to opening in Detroit. And we’d love to have your support by sharing our story with your readers. It’s an interesting one for sure.

Attached is a link to a PR kit to learn more about us and see what we’re up to. There’s a short video too so you can see what we look like.

And, yes, it will be sustainable.

Best to you and all at the Michigan Beer Buzz.

  7. We are BREWLAND, a documentary looking at craft beer in the United States. We have started on the East Coast and are looking to expand out to see craft beer in the US. We have started a Indiegogo campaign to help raise funds – we would love your support in getting the word out to the wonderful craft beer scene of Michigan.

I have been working on this project with my twin brother, Mike, another craft beer enthusiast and filmmaker. We would love your support and help with the project. Could you publish the link, an article and/or display a banner about the project on your website and social media? Your support would go far in helping us achieve our campaign goals to raise the funds we need to finish. None of this money goes into the pockets of the film team. It’s all to cover the costs of post-production and, hopefully, some additional filming. This has always been a passion project for us and is not about money.

I can send a Press Release and can send a few behind the scenes photos of your interview session if you are interested. Our website is fully live; please feel free to check it out! We setup each interviewee with links to their website and social networking along with a screen grab from the film. Many more updates to the site are coming and feedback is always welcome!
