Make Her Grow from a Young Girl to a Teenager in Seconds…
Awhile back, I got in to an email tag-jag with my cousin (I think I just invented a phrase). We started passing ebay listings back and forth featuring our favorite/most memorable childhood toys. I had this one…
I wish like crazy I’d have kept her. Growing up Skipper (there was also a Growing Up Ginger). The running joke was my Dad would grab my mom’s arm and start cranking, hoping for results. I’m thinking I ought to invent a Pre-Menopausal Skipper. You crank her arm, her hair turns gray, her gut sticks out and all she does is laundry. Whatdya think?
Robin

So did you see the one on e-bay for $174.00 -Buy it Now??? I almost freaked. This Christmas, the kids only get to look at their toys, we are keeping them in the box so we can e-bay them 30 years from now!! Sorry girls, you will thank me later.

This site you can order the old clothes for Barbie. “Barbie Mod” is probably what we had. Groovey Baby.

I remember Golden Dream Barbie, Superstar Barbie and Malibu Barbie. It was always kind of a jackass litmus test remember? Malibu Barbie. If you were playing over at a friend’s house and she insisted Malibu Barbie had to be IN pretend Malibu, then that friend was clearly a jackass. We always had elaborate Barbie plots that usually involved some sort of international intrigue.

Golden Dream was one rockin’ hot Barbie Babe.

She was my main Barbie as I recall. Y’know, you had your main Barbie. Then you had your side-kick Barbie. That was the Cher doll, the Marie Osmond doll, Skipper, Bionic Woman. I had the 12 inch Princess Leia doll. She was larger and thicker than Golden Dream with ginormous feet so she was usually relegated to the roll of Barbie’s oafish, Eastern European friend. Oh…and the Sonny doll was always the bad guy, for some reason.

Poor Sonny, no respect.

This is what I remember!! From good ‘ol 1979
I too had Marie Osmond and Princess Leia–her feet were so damn huge they wouldn’t fit into the regular Barbie shoes, made me so made cuz that was the best part, changing their clothes, shoes and doing their hair. Although with Princess Leia I never wanted to take our her “doughnuts” because her hair was soooo cool. Then my stinkin’ brother did it to be mean. Life goes on…

OK, I can tell you guys are about 10 years younger than me! I had an original (ok, maybe year 2) Barbie, who had a short curly ‘do–none of that skipper or malibu stuff (and since star wars came out when I was in high school–I was a little too old for that one!). My “little” sister had the cooler Barbies. We got rid of Ken and had Barbie hanging out w/my brother’s GI Joes (which he insisted were action figures, not dolls!).
Nowadays, there’s a new must-have every 6 months! I’m just grateful I have 3 boys, so I didn’t have to ever worry about getting the out-of-date version (that was SOOO last week).

Don’t worry Phyllis, we had the “older” Barbies too. I swear we had the original with the black and white striped one-piece bathing suit. I think they were my Aunt’s. My mom used to put them on a shelf in my sister’s room (one of them was wearing the most beautiful wedding dress). We finally pestered her to death and she let us play with them. We, of course destroyed them. I also had the entire set of Mego Wizard of Oz dolls up on that shelf. All gone now. Doh!
Luckily, my daughter has shown very little interest in dolls. She’s all about animals. Horses in particular. I’ve ingrained in her that Bratz dolls are evil. She boos whenever they come on T.V. Of course…the backlash on that one could be fierce

Phyllis they had barbies then? LMAO—JK you are the best!!Good to see you on here.
My daughter has grown out of the Bratz/Barbie stage and I don’t know if I shall keep those little devils (bratz). As for the Barbie’s, she gave them all hair cuts and the puppy chewed off a couple of limbs. Ken was beheaded by my son’s friends and destroyed one joyful night in the basement. Robin lets hope ur daughter never develops a liking to the lil devils. GO animals!!!

Ah the bratz dolls. And they say Barbie is shaped unnaturally!
Robin–I like your pre-menopausal idea. I have a book for you–it’s called “cooking with hot flashes” (a topic for another blog on another day.
Cheryl, if you look very carefully, you’ll see that I’ve posted elsewhere a little surreptiously. Maybe I should buy some barbies just to see what happens when my boys get ahold of them (and you know my boys!!!!)

Ah…see…it was just Becky and me. No evil brothers. My husband, however, has 2 brothers and 3 step-brothers. They are BRUTAL. One of his brothers’ favorite past times was taking their girl cousins’ cabbage patch dolls and denting all of their foreheads’ in. As it stands now, my son likes to rip the bobble heads off my daughters’ Littlest Pet Shop animals and switch them on to different bodies. We have a pug/squirrel, a kitten/skunk etc.

sounds like you have a budding scientist! Isn’t that how development of the Liger (lion/tiger) got started? And who knows–maybe the first breeder the the mighty Mules started that way as well.

It is good to have boys on the Barbie front that’s true. But I have 375 Power Rangers collecting dust in the basement.

I still have the whole thundercat collection from my eldest son (25). They have to be worth SOMETHING at this point!
