I’m a Sap!

Filed under: out and about in Bedford — Robin Dec @ 6:44 pm

Just a quickie blog here, X-mas craziness in full swing!

I got treated to a wonderful (and unexpected) holiday moment today. I volunteered at the kids’ school and got to sit in on the BHS Symphonic Band concert. They were fantastic and conductor Ron Koch did such a great job putting on a show for the little ones. The elementary kids were riveted. He talked about each section of the band so the kids would know a woodwind from a percussion instrument etc. My son’s hands down favorite was when the Tuba players did the famous rift from Darth Vader’s Theme. All the little boys screamed in unison and pretended they had light sabers for about 30 seconds afterwards.

I gotta admit, it made me a little weepy (though I kept telling people it was my sinuses!). Back in the day, I was a clarinet player in Symphoic Band under Mr. Tolly. Good memories and the kids (both the audience and the performers) did Bedford proud today. I wish I had pictures but I didn’t realize in advance I’d be going to it.

  1. Robin, what a wonderful surprise! I’m not afraid to admit I get weepy eyed especially when my kids in the program. Our son played trumpet in 5th grade, but no further. Hell my daughter and I could be singing to Hanna Montana in the car and I get weepy eyed because she finally LOVES MUSIC!! Woot Woot

I’m a big sap too! Proud to admit it ;)

  2. Yeah, that’s what was funny though. My kids weren’t in the program. They were in the audience and I got weepy. Good to know I’m not alone ;)

  3. I think when we see something that positively impacts our kids, even for a fleeting moment, and draws us back to things we know influenced us in good way, we should get a little weepy. I proves we care. Heck, I tear up at the alma mater at the football games (and I even know the words).

Bedford bands and choirs have always been first rate and we need to celebrate their success. Let the tears come!!

  5. I knew it!! I pegged you for a clarinet player. I too was a proud player of the clarinet and I played for BHS (Belleville High School :) Oh, and you should see me cry like a baby when I see the marching band play at football games.

  6. Sadly, I haven’t picked up a clarinet since I quit band in the 10th grade. I don’t know if I could still remember all the fingering. Maybe if I didn’t didn’t think too hard about it.

So what was the Belleville mascot Cheryl? We were (are) the Kicking Mules. Hence, my blog tagline.

  7. Ahhhh, we were the Tigers and I retired my uniform and clarinet in the 10th grade as well…mostly to the tune of “WHAT…I just paid $1200.00 for that clarinet…you are grounded….FOREVER”. (that was my mothers view) and needless to say, she has kept that clarinet in hopes that one of my girls will use it :) One down two to go.
