I Can’t Believe I Made My Kids Eat That: Vol. II

Filed under: I can't believe I made my kids eat that — Robin Dec @ 4:33 pm

I started out with good intentions. I usually do. It was lunchtime. It happened to just be me and the kids. We needed to go grocery shopping but I didn’t have time. One wanted sandwiches, the other one wanted nuggets at first. Then, they looked at each other, looked at me and yelled,  ”Pizza!”

A consensus. This is rare. All righty, I thought. I was sure we had some Dijorno or something like it. We did not. Ok, I didn’t have all the fixins for homemade. But…I had a major meltdown on my hands. They were determined.

Ok. I’ll just have to be creative. (Remember that phrase. Everytime I utter or think it, you can be sure it’s going to end up as a blog topic.)

Bread. Check. Pizza sauce. Not so much. Not even an inkling of anything remotely related to pizza sauce ingredients except for a teeny can of tomato paste. I DID have spaghetti sauce. Close enough. Right? They’re munchkins, how discriminating can they be? Cheese. Check. Pepperoni. Check.

I was an enabler, I know, but I couldn’t bring myself to participate any further. I handed them all of the ingredients and this is what they created.

This is what happened.

The ketchup was my daughter’s idea. “Ugh, but that will make it gross, honey.” Yeah, she looked at me with about the exact same expression as you have right now. Why not!

My son thought it was the best thing he’d ever tasted. He wants to do it again.

I think I’ll stick with Taco Helper (husband’s working again tonight). It could end badly.

  1. I cannot believe you forgot the whole anchovies and pineapple chunks.

    Some people, ya’ know?

  2. Would clementines and tuna fish have worked?

  3. Only if the clementines had a horseradish coating.

  4. try toasted bagels instead of the bread–it holds the ingredients better. Garlic bread also works well.

Is that the taco helper you posted about last time?

  5. LMAO Robin!!! My hubby’s been out of town for a week and tonite I had to break and go to the grocery store. I couldn’t eat the snacky snacks he buys for himself and the kids at Sam’s again tonite for dinner.

If you recall awhile back on RR’s blog about the paper towels. My husband Mark does all of our grocery shopping. Therefore when he was told he had to go out of town, there wasn’t enough time to get our household shopping done. What was HE thinking, dammit! So on my way home tonite I stopped by my friendly Food Town and bought..get this…lean cousines and lean gourmet Michelena’s.

LPC I’m sorry, but with my son’s busy basketball schedule and working full time, I thought what the heck. I’m counting points and they have the points values on the packages, so we’re good! Lola and I had a delicious dinner tonite and I just love the descriptions of these dinners….my pick-roasted turkey medallions with mashed potatoes and gravy (4pts), Lola’s-roasted potatoes with brocoli and cheddar cheese sauce (5pts)–not that my 10 year old is counting points, but its low if you want to try it.

Have any of you been successful with the points and do you have any suggestions for good stuff for a busy Mom with kids on the go?

  6. Cheryl, Mayor Mary’s on the Core program, which is actually kinda fun to cook for. For Christmas I gave her a WW book with 500 recipes, a lot of them being Core. She picks something out, marks the page, and it shows up for dinner in a day or so.

What bothers us is that, while the WW Smart Ones packages are great for her lunches at work, none of them are labeled as Core! Their web site is iffy on the subject at best … it looks like they’re all Core? There’s no way to tell when you’re looking at them. I’m trying to get clarification.

Anyway, I do frozen foods on occasion just like anyone else. The big tubs of Stouffer’s Mac ‘n Cheese and Meat Lasagna (with a Cole’s garlic bread) are great for when the kids are here and we get really busy! ;-) (Get these at GFS … they’re still Stouffer’s, without the box and $2 cheaper!)

  7. Thanks Phyllis, we literally had no breadstuffs in the house except…well…bread. You can’t tell from the picture but we did toast the bread before zapping it.

Ah…weight watchers. I will say, mommy’s pizza concoction actually was about on par w/ the Lean Cuisine pizza’s in terms of taste.

    I’m SO going to Gordon’s!

  8. Right on LPC with the Stoufer’s and Cole’s gar. bread, YUM
    Congrats Mary on becoming Mayor!!!!

WW update, a co-worker told me today–she’s in Columbus that the leader of her meeting said they recommend doing the frozen meals for lunch and dinner the first 2 weeks of joining the program. This helps to teach you portion control.

  9. And did you add up the WW points for this yummy meal. Hey, you could have this recipe passed around at the next local meeting-the kids would be famous-mini Emeril’s :)
