Mockingbird Month…

April 8th, 2008 Posted in Nonfiction, Programs

Whew! Been going to so many BIG READ events that I feel I am immersed in Harper Lee and her wonderful book.  Just finishing  Mockingbird: a Portrait of Harper Lee by Charles Shields. He does a remarkable job chronicling Harper Lee’s life considering that she would not cooperate in any way, shape or form! If fact, it seems she has a tendency to write HELL NO!  on requests and mailing them back to people. And, if you have ever wondered why she never completed another book and why she wants to stay out of the limelight…this is the book for you.  I found myself feeling very sad and angry as I read about how Truman Capote treated her over In Cold Blood.  I think Shields would argue that there would have been no In Cold Blood without her. This period when both her book and his were published damaged their relationship from then on…

Remember, there are still lots of Big Read events left… we have Heritage Scrapbooking this Saturday at the Bedford Branch, the film series continues, and there are many more events. Take a look at the entire schedule at http://www.monroeccc.edu/bigread/default.htm.
