One of These People is The Godfather of Soul

James Brown and Rebecca Regnier

And one is not.

I challenge anyone with time to kill to guess the story behind this photo taken on February 1st, 1981.

P.S. I thank you for your patience with me on my infrequent posting. Both the kids are heavy into their extra-curricular stuff. After work I am the driver/concession-stand-worker/photographer/laundress and it would be wrong to blog while driving. I hope you all had a lovely Valentine’s Day.

  1. Hey, regardless of whatever the story behind this picture is, the fact that you have it and that it’s in such great condition after almost 30 years is way cool in its own way! :-)

Well…now I’m a ringer so I guess it won’t be fair to say anything.

Oooooh, but did I ever mention my encounter w/ the the original Gordon from Sesame Street. Yeah, I know…totally not the same.

You did mention Gordon. It’s very cool. I’d like to meet Grover.

I have a very frightening photo for me when my dad took my brother and I to JC Penny’s to have our picture with Spider Man, great photo of my part LOL, couldn’t see my cute lil face–terrifying for lil kid! HA

No photo, but we saw Alice Cooper in a Rolls Royce on Rodeo Dr when we visited California–geez that was 12 years ago YIKES–very cool.

  7. That’s supposed to read: sang… but now that I went back and read the comments, I’m shocked to discover it’s Gordon from Sesame!! He’s actually still on because I watch with Tukey!

At further inspection, I thought it was J-J Dy-NOO-MYTE from Good Times! ; )

No it’s not Gordon, it’s the GODFATHER OF SOUL people. JAMES BROWN! I Feel Good, Living in America? I thought the title gave that away.

Still, how is it that I’m with James Brown? That’s the question… was I on tour? Back up singer?

Early start on your journalistic journey… Given the lady peaking over your shoulder, it almost looks like you were in front of the TV cameras. 1981–you were what, 12 or 13? Looks like wherever it was was very cold, given his fur coat.

  10. I did start my journalistic career young.

But in this case I was 6th grade exchange student in France. I was there for a month. When I left France I ran into James Brown in the airport. He was kind enough to take pictures with all our group.

Of course a few weeks later I was showing my photo albums to family and they’d be, “nice mountains, pretty cathedral, cool Louvre… wait.. IS THAT THE GODFATHER OF SOUL?”

So it was a good trip but a GREAT scrapbook. (He declined my offer to be a backup singer.)
