I am speaking at Bedford Junior High School’s Career Day. I’ve done this event for years because it’s so much fun to talk to the kids. They’re right on the cusp of high school and since they get to choose what careers they’d like to learn about they always participate in the discussion.
Each year I bring my Bedford Bronco Yearbook circa 1982-1984. They usually get a kick out of how dorky we looked back then, okay how dorky I looked back then.
One of my favorite moments during this BJHS career day event was a few years back. An eighth grade student introduced herself as Rebecca. She then said “I was you for Halloween.”
Hunh?
Young Rebecca explained that for Halloween she donned a blazer and fashioned a microphone with a 13ABC mic flag (the things around the mic with station logos on them.) Young Rebecca then created a television out of a card board box by cutting out a “screen.” She walked around with her head framed in the t.v. and explained that she was Rebecca Regnier, 13 Action News, if anyone didn’t get it.
I am sure she scared quite a few people with this costume.
When I go back to talk to 13 year-olds I try to remember my thoughts as a 13 year-old. They’re about the same except now I can drive.
I remember being so over “one way halls” and “one way stairs” at the Junior High. I also remember I was allowed to spend a ridiculous amount of time “decorating the showcase.” This was the case at the front of the school and for some reason I got to make a display for it. See, me dorky.
So what were you thinking in the eighth grade? Were you thinking in eighth grade? Who was President? What was he thinking?
I’ll try to take a few pictures and post them after the big day. And just a side note I realize I used quoatation marks quite a bit today. I don’t know “why.”
Meanwhile… SO SICK OF SNOW! And so is the school district. I talked to several school districts in Michigan and Ohio that are out of calamity time. So parents if you plan to go out of town for the summer it would be wise to keep in mind the school year might have one or two extra days after the currently posted last-day-of-school.

Make sure you look Matt up while you’re there (and you know you’ll be looking up at any rate!). Not quite sure what he wants to be when he grows up. His oldest brother (betcha didn’t know I have a 25 year old!) has a degree in broadcasting from CMU–he’s selling cars.
As for me in 8th grade: Richard Nixon was President for a little while. Then he resigned and we got Jerry. I was in school in Detroit (actually IN Detroit). We started school October 17 because of a teacher’s strike–got out on July 12, 1974 that year. Not TOO concerned about a couple extra days for my boys. (Think no AC in the school, and we weren’t allowed to wear shorts!).
Came to BJHS the next year–as a freshman because the intermediate was still around. I remember falling up one of the up staircases. UGH!
Have fun!
BTW–they had you out in the snow AGAIN today. Too bad you couldn’t have been IN the schools reporting on the year end extension; of course that may have been tough because they closed..
I’ll look up your your boy Phyllis. And I didn’t know about the 25 year old.
Ah the intermediate! I went to 7th grade there.
I can’t complain about the noon live shot, the sun was out. That makes the cold much easier.
I actually have a picture of you shaking the 16 year olds hand at 8th grade recognition 2 years ago. It would be great to have one of you and my “little” (if 6′+ is little) one. Then he could post his encounter with a famous person on his myspace…
How long ago was the Hallowe’en incident? Is that Rebecca close to your elder? Just an outside thought, but they could get married some day and then she really could be Rebecca Regnier *)
Oh the Halloween thing was five or more years ago. I am so grateful someone took a pic when I did the 8th grade graduation. It was such a fun day for me. I was honored to speak then and Mrs. Zaum’s has asked me to speak this year as well. I’m already nervous.
And of course anyone who wants a pic on Friday is welcome to it. Although “famous” is a stretch.
Talk to you soon.
G’night.
I’m sure you were probably a bit om the proud side that someone was you for Halloween! That was very sweet of that there young’un … 8th grade would have been 19seventy … (math is hard!) … 4 - 1975. Ford would have been President since Nixon resigned in early August, meaning Ford was probably thinking, “What the Hell just happened???” I was thinking about how to get through classes as easily as possible (a straight D student!), how to avoid gym, and who would be the first bully to beat me up once I got over to the high school the following September. At the end of that year, Barb graduated from high school and Carol was married two weeks later, so there was a ton of planning for the first events I was ever involved with.
In eighth grade I was thinking…”Troy is so cute!”
You did such an awesome job at Ben’s 8th grade recognition…you have nothing to be nervous about
YOU were so cute in the 8th grade! Thanks for the comment on the recognition stuff. Writing a speech for an 8th grade audience is challenging.. awesome.. I’ll take it. I’m just hoping for “sick.”
And LPC clearly the grades didn’t indicate your intellect! You’re A+ all the way.
Tami thank you.. It’s tricky playing to an 8th grade audience! I hope they think I’m “sick.”
And of course LPC the grades didn’t indicate the A+ brain you’ve got going there!
8th grade hmmmm I remember bermuda shorts and shopping at the Limited every week (using my babysitting money). School dances were fun and I’m trying to think who I had a crush on…..escapes me oh wait I’ll check my yearbook—Craig Manz. Foxiest guy in 8th grade!
You’ll do great at the 8th grade recognition–went thru it last year and I had NO IDEA it was the full blown gradutation style–YOWZA–but bittersweet.
I don’t think our sub division streets can handle any more snow. I know I won’t be able to get out now that I have a “car”
In my opinion you will always be “sick” but never “phat”!
Matt said he stopped and said hi to you yesterday. He’s wishing he would have gone to your session instead of the one he went to!
You’re son stopped by and was so nice. And he is a tall one! We had a lot of fun at my sessions and if I get it together later today I’ll post a pic or two. I heard good reviews from the kids who were at the law enforcement sessions too.
Plus the school gave us all a free apple pie as a thank you! Of course the family and I polished that treat off by the next day.
It’s all a blur! Tami, Becky — were we really at the Junior High in 8th grade? When were we at the Intermediate building? I think I remember an extended period of insanity — lots of weird black clothes, sneeking away to concerts in Ann Arbor, thinking WAY too much about the opposite sex. (Thank God, my Emily doesn’t seem to have inherited my skewed sense of style and constantly roaming eye, although we do have High School to look forward to, don’t we?)
In all seriousness, I remember that being a time of personal upheaval — painful, but necessary in order to start forging my sense of self. I guess it all turned out okay.
We were. 7th was at the intermediate, 8th and 9th in the Junior High. While at the BJHS when we were in the 9th the seventh graders came over and they closed the intermediate.
We we also the class that had to STAY at the elementaries an extra year and then the class that was dismissed at 1:30 for a year.
And Laura - no matter what upheaval you were going through you were always so sweet. You befriended this total nerd!
