CNN: Rebates too little, too late?

The MonroeTalkers are chatting about when their economic stimulus checks are arriving.

In the meantime, CNN has this story: Rebate checks arrive, but could be too little, too late.

A snippet:

“This is will not avert a recession, because it is too late,” said Lakshman Achuthan, the managing director of the Economic Cycle Research Institute. “For this to have kept us out of what was an avoidable recession, it needed to happen a couple of months ago, in January or February.” …

What’s more worrisome to some is that the rebates might do just enough to lull people into thinking that the economy is on the upswing again.

Well, I don’t think anybody in Michigan will be lulled into thinking the economy is temporarily on the upswing. Most of us are just treading water, and we’ve been doing that for a lot longer that the rest of the country.

Too little & to late is so true. And I do not think this is going to turn much around for people. Almost everyone we know is using their money to pay bills. We are going to purchase a new freezer since ours kicked the bucket. Make a few clothes purchases & pay on a credit card. Our one splurge will be a prepaid one year subscription to the MEN. I need more coupons. :}

I work at The Monroe Evening News, so I thank you for the vote of confidence!

But I’m also a coupon-clipper. And here’s what bargain-hunting coupon customers should know:

90 percent of all grocery coupons are distributed with the Sunday papers. Source: Detroit Free Press story on March 19.
