Festival of Frugality 4/29

Sound Money Matters is hosting the April 29 edition of Festival of Frugality. Here are some of the frugal lifestyle articles you’ll find from bloggers across the Internet:

  • Money Blue Book presents One Great Potential Benefit of Higher Gas Prices- Less Traffic: “The higher cost of driving will force many to think twice about storming onto the roads, and force solitary drivers who commute every day to work by themselves to buddy up and join a car pool.” Public transit options are limited for the Monroe County residents who commute to Toledo, Ann Arbor or Detroit. But there are carpool networks, see Monday’s story in the Monroe Evening News.
  • Credit Addict presents Tax Rebate + Reward Credit Card: “Because this card offer 5% cash back on grocery store purchases, you’ll get the 10% bonus from Kroger plus 5% cash back from AmEx.” This is a very creative approach. But it only works if you are disciplined with those credit cards. For some of you, the more appropriate bang-for-the-buck will be using the grocery purchases to earn points for Kroger gas pump discounts.
  • The Digerati Life presents Coupon Tips and Tricks that Can Cut Your Grocery Bill by 80 percent: “It can be work to clip and organize coupons, but if you think of them as “found or free money”, you may have a different attitude towards investing 30 minutes per weekly grocery trip on collecting them.” The coupon policies at Monroe-area stores means that I have, many times, purchased products for free or very deep discount with sale + coupon or even sale + rebate + coupon.
  • Home Life Weekly presents How to make homemade dishwasher detergent: “We all know how expensive dishwasher detergent can be so here is a way to make you own dishwasher detergent with this simple recipe.” I have not tried a lot of homemade cleaners, but I have done the trick HLW lists for rinse aid and it seems to work.
  • Gagazine presents 5 Tips on Shopping for Baby on a Budget: “If you’d like to purchase one or two great outfits for special occasions, you can still save money by purchasing every day clothing from discount stores, thrift stores or yard sales.” Southeast Michigan has a custom called Mom 2 Mom Sales, which I wrote about last week. If you don’t want to buy at such a sale, you can still benefit by participating as a vendor.
  • And Monroe on a Budget presents: How I learned to like iced tea. “Even those who don’t drink iced tea year-round might find it to be a refreshing treat during the summer.” Yes I had my teapot perking tonight.
