I’m trying to grow something useful
I’m trying to grow something useful this year.
My husband and I usually have just have flowers and landscaping plants in our yard.
Several years ago, I attempted to plant something useful. I think I planted peas. While my husband is good with flowers; neither of us knew how to take care of edible plants. That experiment ended rather quickly.
But it would be keeping with “frugal lifestyle” concepts, which are increasingly important these days, to grow something useful.
The problem is: our back yard is patio-sized. There’s no room for a vegetable garden.
So I’m starting a container herb garden this season. We had some pots and dirt already, plus my mother has hand-me-downs that are up for grabs. So this is a “low overhead” project.
I went to the Monroe Farmer’s Market this morning and bought a bundle of peppermint for my first pot of dirt.
Why did I start with peppermint? It was grown for years by my mother and grandmother at their homes. While the family plants have long been uprooted and gone, peppermint smells good and brings happy memories. (And I’ve been warned by several people that one really should keep this plant contained LOL!)
Now I have to decide what else to add to my collection of useful container plants!

And here’s what I decided on for the “addition” to my container garden: two pots of strawberry plants. I set those up today.

You can do almost anything in container gardening. My mom does tomatoes and green peppers! I am going to give it a try this year since I know our busy schedules won’t allow time for a full garden!

I thought it was odd the other day when my mother asked “What will you grow in your ‘victory garden’?”
Then today I found this Associated Press article in the Dallas Morning News referenced at Yahoo Green:
“Victory Gardens revive World War II project, with a modern twist”
