Festival of Frugality 5/20
The Financial Blogger is hosting the May 20 edition of The Festival of Frugality.
If you like participating or attending the car shows that pop up everywhere in southeast Michigan during the spring and summer, you’ll enjoy FB’s virtual car show photos that are mixed in with the links to dozens of frugal lifestyle blogs.
Here are some of the posts that you’ll find:
- Brip Blap presents A simple way to save money on food: “Eating breakfast is a big money-saver. Failing to eat breakfast means that you’re going to be tempted to grab a coffee and a bagel, a Pop-Tart or a power bar around 11 a.m.” If you know you’re going to grab a snack whether you eat breakfast or not, a stash of granola bars and such will be cheaper if bought at a grocery store ahead of time than bought from a vending machine or restaurant. on a daily basis
- Destroy Debt presents What NOT to do when a bill collector calls: “Being past due on your obligations can be trying and difficult. It is in your best interest to maintain a level head, keep your ego in check, and work with the collector so that both of you can feel like you’ve achieved a win-win situation.” There are practical tips in this post, be sure to read it if you expect to be, or are in, this situation.
- The Digerati Life presents Great Places to Earn and Save Money: “The used goods market is heating up big time. Which could be the silver lining to those of you who are frugalists in the market for buying stuff. So if you’re looking to buy anything, you’re in luck, as you’re in the midst of fire sales right about now.” My husband and I noticed that second-hand market values have been falling for some time on some of our favorite collection items. It’s a good thing we always bought pieces because we liked the item, rather than for potential profit on a sale down the road.
- Prime Time Money presents Extreme Savers: A Closer Look: “What’s impressive to me is that these people were able to save a great deal even though they have mid-level incomes. Most in the series were living off incomes of less than $60,000.” While it may seem not worth the while to take on one particular money-saving method on its own, you can add that effort to another to another and another. As you add more frugal lifestyle tactics to your routines, you can build up some serious household budget savings.
- Sound Money Matters presents Save or Spend on Makeup: “Eye shadow. Go cheap for trendy colors. This year’s “must-have” shade is next year’s “are you kidding me” color. For traditional colors you’ll wear more often, be willing to spend more for richer, longer-lasting color.” I cleaned all the old junk out of my makeup kit about three years ago and limited my replacement purchases to everyday colors. Right now I have one blush, two eye shadows, one powder, one foundation and three lipsticks.
- Monroe on a Budget presents: “Payday loans cheaper than bounced checks?”: “If you are living paycheck to paycheck, you do have another choice than payday loan or bounced checks: Figure out another way to stay within those paychecks.” Are there any bloggers in northwest Ohio who focus on frugal lifestyles? If so, send me the link and I’ll post it. Programs and services vary quite a bit across the state line. I don’t think we want Toledo residents driving to Monroe to use the payday lending services because they’re out of financial options.

Speaking of the “used goods market”, I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I dropped some items off to the local Goodwill store and, along with my tax deductible receipt I received a coupon for 20% off my next purchase at Goodwill. This could really provide substantial savings as our Goodwill often has NEW merchandise from a local chain store… I recently bought a BRAND NEW, in box, with instruction, $30+ Brita water pitcher for $10… Goodwill, like Big Lots, is one of those places I like to stop by if I have a few minutes just to see what they have…

Goodwill is a good place to look for close-out holiday merchandise too.
