Festival of Frugality 5/27

Funny About Money is hosting the May 27 edition of the Festival of Frugality. Here are some of the more than 60 entries that bloggers from across the Internet have written in the past week or so about frugal living:

  • More 4 Kids presents Gas Saving Tips: “On a trip check out the public transportation system ahead of time, and make it a fun experience. For example, taking a cable car ride in San Francisco can be an experience of a lifetime for a child.” For children who ride in a family car everywhere they go, it can be quite a surprise as to how the rest of the world gets around their hometowns.
  • Slow Down Fast presents How to Become Wealthy by Living Within Your Means: “Most of the things we want aren’t designed to improve our lives; they’re just designed to get us to spend more money.” Be picky about the frills you add to your lifestyle. It’s one thing if you really enjoy and use that service or product; it’s another thing if you buy it because you are keeping up with what everybody else is doing.
  • My Good Cents presents How I Organize My Coupons: “Some people file their coupon fliers by date and then only clip when they are going to buy something. Unfortunately, this didn’t really work for me.” I cut out every coupon I might use, cut out a separate pile for give-aways, and keep my coupons sorted by category in a plastic index card box that goes on all shopping trips. The grocery fliers and rebate books stay home until I’m going to that specific store.
  • Monroe on a Budget presents Don’t fret over teacher gifts: “One of my students gave me a $10 gift card to Panera Bread this year and I am quite happy with that.” Now here’s an appeal to those of you who want to coordinate efforts so that the students and parents contribute to a big gift – please back off. You do not know what the other families are dealing with financially, and they don’t want to explain their personal circumstances to strangers. Let each family determine how they individually want to honor their teachers.
