Unemployment benefits to be extended
A plan to extend unemployment benefits by 13 weeks for certain unemployed workers, including many in Michigan, is on the fast track to the White House.
The program targets those who used up their benefits allotment of 26 weeks between November 2006 and March 2009. About 226,000 Michigan residents are expected to be eligible now or within a few weeks for the extension. According to news reports, all of Michigan’s 15 House members voted for the bill.
The status: the House approved the package Thursday, but the Senate is expected to approve it quickly and the White House has issued a statement that President Bush will sign it.
As you follow the links, be aware that some of the news of this package is buried among other issues that Congress dealt with on Thursday. In fact, it was harder than I expected to compile a headline roundup.
