Festival of Frugality 7/8

Squawkfox is hosting the July 8 Festival of Frugality. Here is part of her introduction:

The bloggers in this festive edition have gotten down to the nitty gritty of frugal living. Follow this frugal festival to find the fruitful ways to live simply with the essential bare necessities.

And with that hint at her presentation, here are some of the posts you’ll find this week with the “bare necessities” of frugal living:

  • Paid Twice presents Four strategies to fight the takeout urge: “Sometimes the idea of cooking feels awful but leftovers feel worse. That’s what I keep a few quick-fix favorites on hand for.” Tortillas, shredded cheese, canned soup, frozen meat pieces that can go on the grill …
  • Funny About Money presents Throwing money in the trash: “In what way is letting a container of loose change collect dust eliciting any effort? It just sits there, not asking you to do any work while it quietly accumulates cash.” We’ve got a big change jug. One time it coughed up $80 when we really needed cash.
  • Sound Money Matters presents Shrinking groceries: “I have a recipe that calls for a specific sized can of tomato sauce. Now that the can is smaller, I had to modify the recipe to account for the difference.” I got caught by that problem with canned pie filling years ago when I was making dessert for company. Whoops! I wrote a complaint letter to the company, but what I got back was a note that it was unfortunate I didn’t notice what was on the food label.
  • And for you drugstore rebate fans, check out the posts by Monroe on a Budget, Chief Family Officer and We Like Money. If you’re new to drugstore rebates, pick one store and learn its system. Then next month, pick another. I have rebate loops going at Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS.
