MEN: United Way of Monroe County feeling pinch
The Monroe Evening News reported Sunday that the United Way of Monroe County is feeling the pinch as people lose jobs.
A snippet:
Layoffs, workers being transferred to jobs in other counties and even lower stocks and interest rates are affecting the charitable agency’s collections, according to Connie Carroll, executive director.
At its annual meeting earlier this year, the agency reported pledges of $1,229,000, about $4,000 higher than its target. But most pledge dollars come through regular payroll deductions, and when jobs are cut, the pledged dollars disappear.
