The holiday weekend probably is affecting the number of Sunday newspaper inserts today. Retailers generally like to advertise to readers who are home and ready to shop. However, some stores do run big specials on a holiday weekend. I shopped at a couple of those sales during the past couple of days – did you?

Besides, there are some pretty good deals in today’s sales fliers. I’ll be making one of my shopping trips after church services this morning.

In the meantime  …. as I posted yesterday, the back-to-school sales have started. Buy stuff you know that is needed now, even if you don’t have a supply list yet for your child’s classroom. You can pick up a couple of odds and ends later, but you won’t find the early season prices, or as much selection, in September.

Here are the sales fliers that were in my home-delivery edition of The Monroe Evening News today.

Coupons

• P&G Brand Saver. Clip them before you hit some of this week’s specials – you will find P&G products on sale.

Grocery and drug stores

• Walgreens has coupon specials on Puff’s tissue. There is a bundle promotion in the EasySaver catalog at the store for Dasani, Listerine and Tylenol. Kellogg’s cereal is on the Register Rewards program. School paper is 39 cents a pack with coupon from flier. Pens are 99 cents a pack. Lots of cleaning supplies and baby products on sale.
• Meijer has milk for $2.77. Buy one, get one free on frozen chicken breasts. There’s a 10 for $10 get 11th item free sale – the list features Meijer brand products such as bread and applesauce, but do notice that Pepsi 2-liters are on the list.
• Kroger (sale starts Monday) will have Breyer’s ice cream at $2.27, Kroger whipped topping at 88 cents, General Mills cereal at $1.99. Milk is 3 half gallons for $5 – which translates to $3.32 a gallon. Buy four 12-packs of Coke products get two Kroger brand snacks free. There’s a P&G mix and match bundle promotion – do clip your coupons before you hit that sale.
• CVS Pharmacy also has a P&G sale promotion – and if you buy $20 worth, you get a free 24-pack of drinking water. Create a photo memory album with your digital images for $9.99. Buy $20 worth of Olay skin care get $10 Extra Care Bucks back. Buy one, get one free on CVS brand vitamins and herbals.
• Aldi has strawberries, blueberries and peaches on sale. The promotions of the week also include ice cream and ice cream toppings

Department and specialty stores

• Durocher’s Brand Source flier lists specials on kitchen and laundry appliances.
• Kmart has Martha Stewart Everyday bedding, bath towels and bath rugs on sale. Women’s shorts, jersey tees and tanks on sale for $4. End of season sale on outdoor living items includes grills, queen-size air bed and outdoor toys. School uniforms available at kmart.com.
• Kohl’s has men’s knit tops at 60 percent off. Most women’s sleepwear is on sale. Oh Baby! by Motherhood maternity is on sale.
• Target has “fetching deals” on pet supplies including Purina Cat Chow, Iams ProActive dog food and selected pet accessories. If you’re shopping for a dorm room, there is a new line of storage cubes. Selected kids’ bedding and bedroom furniture is on sale. Clearance prices on swimwear. Kids summer tops and shorts for $5. Crayola crayons 64 count for $2.
• Meijer’s department store flier features pet supplies such as Purina, Iams and Newman’s Own products. Bird food and bird feeders are on sale. There are coupons in the flier for basketballs and soccer equipment. Do you still have that Rubbermaid Produce Saver tub coupon? Max out your savings on that purchase with $2 off any produce at the store.
• Best Buy has specials on several GPS devices, DVD movies and iPods. The prices are getting more reasonable on SLR digital cameras. Instant savings on several laptop computers.
• Menards has a laundry wall cabinet on sale for $49.99. There’s a ceiling fan on sale for $29.97. Other specials include Pittsburgh paint, fencing, pressure washers, in-stock kitchen cabinets, and solar
• Rex TV has LCD, plasma and projection HDTVs and several car audio pieces in its sales flier. A countertop microwave is $39. Chest freezer for $179.
