For my local readers – yes, Friday’s home-delivery edition of The Monroe Evening News was on the streets late. There was an equipment problem at the press and distribution building, and although the staff could keep working it wasn’t going as fast as usual.

Therefore my daughter and I were already on the way to Toledo for a shopping errand when the newspaper arrived. I’m looking at the ads for the first time. If you’re picking up both the Saturday and Friday newspapers from your front porch or newspaper tube this morning, do look at the Friday sales fliers because here is what you’ll find:

• Meijer has a Back to School Bucks One Day sale today Aug. 16. There are coupons in the flier for general merchandise items. Kraft shredded cheese is half off. Purnell’s Old Folks Sausage is three for $5. Aunt Millie’s honey hot dog or hamburger buns are buy one get two free (yes you can freeze this stuff for a limited time). Tyson sliced bacon is two for $4.
• Sears has a Saturday Only Sale with specials from 9 a.m. to noon today on all kids’ Canyon River Blues jeans and skimmers. Selected shoes are half off. All tires are on sale today. 50 percent off all men’s jeans and back to school bags for her.
• Elder-Beerman concludes its August storewide sale today. Bring in an old pair of denim jeans, get a coupon for 20 percent off your next pair of regular or sale price jeans in the juniors, young mens’ and kids department (hint: did your kid move up to a new size? Bring in the too-small pair!)
