MSNBC: Pinching pennies like your grandparents
MSNBC has this report today: Pinching pennies like your grandparents.
A snippet:
In today’s fast-paced society, the Hillbilly Housewife Web site — with its traditional recipes for making cornmeal mush and tips for turning leftover rice into breakfast pancakes — would seem to be a relic of a bygone era.
But with food and gas prices rising at a faster pace than most paychecks, the site devoted to frugal ways to feed a family has recently seen traffic increase by a third, to about 300,000 unique visitors a month. Susanne Myers, who took over the site from a friend about a year ago, says she’s been deluged with e-mails from people looking for cheap ways to fill their families’ stomachs.
I’ve linked to Hillbilly Housewife previously, and she’s on my blogroll.
One of the neat features is dinner menus based on the groceries in the monthly Angel Food Ministries boxes. I purchase groceries from the Angel Food Ministries program, and you can too if you live near a distribution site. There’s no income requirement for that program.

Here’s the new order dates for the October food box: Sat., Sept. 27, 9–11 a.m.; Wed., Oct. 1, 6–7 p.m.; Tues., Oct. 7, 1–2 p.m. and last day to order is Sat., Oct. 11, 10–11:30 a.m. All orders taken @ Monroe Church of the Nazarene, 3401 S. Custer, on these dates. Distribution date for October order is Sat., Oct. 25. Note: Sat., Sept. 27 isn’t a good day to order for the first time because of the long line of people picking up their Sept. box.
