USA Today: College kids scrimp this year
Back-to-school shopping for the college kids is not going to put as much cash into the retailers’ cash registers this year. USA Today reports that College kids scrimp this year.
A snippet:
Consumers polled say they plan to spend 7% less this year on back-to-college, or an average of $599 per family. That comes even as spending for grade-school students is expected to rise from about $563 in 2007 to $594.
“The college crowd has moved the needle on retail spending for the last five years, but this year that’s not where retailers are seeing growth,” says National Retail Federation spokeswoman Ellen Davis.
Keep in mind that you can’t bring more stuff to your college dorm or apartment than you can fit into whatever vehicle you are driving to campus.
Bring the stuff you KNOW you’ll need and use. If it’s something you THINK you’ll need or use – hold off, that stuff can always be shipped or purchased later.
