Carnival of Personal Finance roundup
The Carnival of Personal Finance for Sept. 15 was hosted by the Personal Financier. Here are some of the quite interesting posts you’ll find this week on all things financial:
- Cracking Gold presents Financially wise and married: “It is simply not enough for one spouse to handle everything about finances. Each one should make a conscious effort to be aware of what’s happening to their money.” I’m the family bookkeeper by default. My husband is not a detail person. However, he knows any time there’s a question on where the money is going, I can pull up the information on the computer.
- Retired at 47 presents Forget about doing what you love: “I think a better approach would be: Maximize your earnings potential in your early years. Then you can do what you love later.” Are young people really still told “do what you love, the money will follow?” I recall hearing that line quite a bit in my teens and 20s. That prediction falls apart when jobs you love disappear and won’t be coming back.
- Brunette on a Budget presents Tips to beat foreclosure: “It might get to the point of where you’re sleeping in sleeping bags on the living room floor, and using milk crates as a dinner table, but that’s okay.” I know it’s not a realistic option in southeast Michigan right now to pick up some overtime or moonlight on a second job. But doing whatever you can to stay afloat always makes good sense, and there are some practical tips here.
- Taking Charge presents Sting of garnishment from years ago still lingers. “Of course, the garnishment went on my credit report as a ding. A few years afterward, I applied for a home mortgage and I took a hit.” Attention local readers: there are public access computers in the lobby of the Monroe County Courthouse where anyone can look up any case that comes through the district court. I’m on that computer system every day to look up data on misdemeanor criminal cases for the court list that is printed in The Monroe Evening News. But other people who are regular users of those computers work for credit bureaus and landlords! What information do you think they are looking for?
