CNN: Incredible shrinking food packages

This has been quite a topic on frugal living blogs and forums in recent months, and CNN has an article today: Raw Deal: the incredible shrinking cereal box.

A snippet:

“They’re raising the prices a little, and shrinking the boxes a little,” said Marcia Mogelonsky, consumer analyst with Mintel International, a consumer research firm in Chicago. “If you’re running through the supermarket, you don’t necessarily notice that your cereal box is an ounce or two smaller. That’s how they’re controlling the prices.” …

But Kellogg isn’t the only company downsizing, or charging the same price for a package that contains less food. Consumers are discovering more air in their bag of chips, fewer sheets of paper towels on the roll, thinner garbage bags and even smaller squares of toilet paper.

What’s one way to get your revenge?

Increase your use of manufacturer grocery coupons : )

The first item I noticed this with was brownie packages a couple of years ago. The best defense is to be aware. It’s us against them! Pillsbury still sells some brownie packages at 13×9″ size. The ice cream and potato chips bags downsizing have gotten me to really look for those companies who still sell at full size and buy from them. I look for web sites to let their customer service know how I feel about it…
