Festival of Frugality blog roundup
The Sept. 16 edition of the Festival of Frugality was hosted by Living Almost Large. Here are some of the posts you’ll find on frugal living concepts:
- MSN’s Smart Spending presents Make your own hot-flash spray, and other frugal hacks: “Another fun gift, for the sheer novelty, would be the peppermint cooling spray made by reader “route66gal.” Her mix of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel and a few drops of peppermint essential oil can be used to battle hot flashes or “just to cool off.” Hmm. I’d have to think through the logistics of that one at work. Maybe I’d keep the spray bottle in my locker rather than at my desk.
- I’ve Paid Twice for This Already presents Couponing is for more than food: “I’ve found coupons for diapers, household cleaning products, toiletries, personal care items, and other products that I buy in my grocery shopping trips, but aren’t classified as food. Because I’m not particularly brand loyal to most of these things, I can combine coupons with sales on particular items.” It took me some time to figure this out too. But it does work, and any tactic you can use to save money on everyday household purchases is a good thing.
- Sound Money Matters presents 10 Frugal Fall Foods: “I pre-cook dried beans and freeze them in bags so I can easily make a fresh bean meal in minutes, without using high-sodium canned beans.” Now I know what to do with that bag of dry beans in my pantry that will feed 10 people!
- Kids Meal Crowd presents Hampered by Bargain Shopping Perfection: “I am full of guilt, especially when I just KNOW I have a coupon for those granola bars or laundry soap at home.” My husband was quite frustrated when, shortly after we bought a new paper shredder, he found an even better deal than the one he carefully crafted with some gift cards and rewards points. The lesson was: the best you can do sometimes is the deal of the day, rather than the deal of the week or the deal of the month. And I have yet to pile up the drugstore rebates to the extent that some other frugal bloggers do on a regular basis. But I am saving money with the time and effort I do put into pursuing those deals, so that’s OK by me.

Thanks for including my post in your Festival roundup. I really like your example, and the perspective you shared. Being OK with getting the best deal at that particular moment in time makes perfect sense…no use worrying excessively over other scenarios. Glad to have found your blog!

Quick tip: if you freeze the beans, freeze them with a little of the cooking liquid. They defrost more quickly and stand up better to freezing.
