Frugal Village’s chocolate chips trick

Sara Noel at Frugal Village has a very good trick from a reader on how to get around the high cost of chocolate chips for baking needs.

Her column is on page 3E of today’s print and e-editions of The Monroe Evening News and here at Sara’s web site. And the chocolate chip trick?

CHEAP BAKING CHOCOLATE: If you want cheap chocolate chips for baking, see whether 12 ounces of candy bars are cheaper than a bag of chocolate chips. Or buy after-holiday-clearance chocolates. Put them in the freezer, and then pound them with a meat hammer or rolling pin until they are “chips.” — Brenda, New York

I would use dark chocolate candy for the traditional semi-sweet flavor. But some of you like milk chocolate chips anyway.

That’s a great idea. Sometimes I have trouble thinking outside the box. Don’t get me wrong. I definitely DO stock up on clearance chocolate candy, but I don’t always think to use them in recipes. I just eat them when I get a craving. :)

I also sent that clip around to my sisters and one sent me this e-mail:

“Regular Hershey’s makes chunky choc chip cookies… yummy yummy. I’ve also melted choc bars down to make brownies and cakes more chocolatey.”
