Some Monroe residents still haven’t filed for stimulus check

This story is on page 2A of today’s print and e-editions of The Monroe Evening News:

State Rep. Kathy Angerer, D-Dundee, is reminding nearly 6,000 residents in Monroe and Washtenaw counties who haven’t filed their federal tax returns to do so in order to receive their federal economic stimulus checks.

“This is money that is due to (residents), and all they have to do is file a tax return — even if they would not ordinarily have to do so.

“The stimulus package has already helped countless families in Michigan, and I want to ensure everyone who is entitled to a payment is taking advantage of it,” Rep. Angerer said in a press release.

According to the Michigan League of Human Services, 2,028 Monroe County residents have yet to file their federal tax returns to receive their stimulus checks of at least $300.

Those who have not filed include disabled veterans, those with disabilities, low-income seniors or people who typically do not have to file returns because they don’t earn enough.

The deadline for filing has been extended to Oct. 15.

To find free help in filing a tax return, call 211 or (800) 552-1183.

A note from your blogger: if you haven’t filed for this check because you don’t need or want the money, consider filing so you can donate the check to a local charity or non-profit whose mission is to help Monroe County families in financial crisis. The local food pantries in particular have been in dire need of supplies as they struggle to keep up with demand.
