Frugal Village: Baby shower gifts on a budget
The Frugal Village blog has this post: Baby shower gifts on a budget.
A snippet:
Buy a gift for mom at the hospital or a baby-care kit. Include quarters for hospital vending machines, snacks for dad, prepaid phone cards, tea, comfy socks or slippers, baby nail clippers and files, newborn hats, nose syringes, baby Tylenol, baby brush and comb, pacifier, gas drops, saline drops, rash ointment or a gift card for a local pharmacy.
Now, that’s pretty clever!
My standing “new mommy” gift is usually a box of chocolates. My thinking is that Mom has earned a box of candy after going through labor and delivery – and the moms usually catch on pretty quick that this present is for them!

That is a very clever idea for new moms. Chocolate is probably a more appropriate delight, but phone cards can be used from some hospitals. They are certainly cheaper than using the hospital phone for long distance calls. An with technology, phone cards can be purchased online and sent via email, or printed from the website and given as such. (:
