MEN: Monroe Christmas aid requests rising
The Salvation Army of Monroe County, Mich., maintains the database for the biggest Christmas charity outreach program that is aimed at local families.
And The Monroe Evening News reports today that those Christmas aid requests are expected to increase.
A snippet:
In 2006, 880 families sought Christmas assistance. Last year, more than 1,100 families applied.
During the first week of sign ups for aid, volunteer Dawn Hitt said, there were lines of people waiting to apply.
Maj. Michael Thomas said the projected increase in need is due primarily to the weak economy and recent layoffs at area companies. This year, he expects the need for Christmas assistance to exceed 1,200 families.
