MEN: Tough times – evictions and foreclosures in Monroe
My co-worker Ray Kisonas has this piece for The Monroe Evening News today: Tough times.
A snippet:
The plainclothes police officer slowly pulls his unmarked car to the side of Lewis Ave. in downtown Ida and the landlord is standing on the sidewalk waiting for him, papers in hand.
On this day, they are meeting to perform an undesirable task that is a sure sign of the economic times.
They are about to evict a family. …
According to the civil division’s statistics, the number of foreclosures rose 63 percent in 2006 and another 49 percent in 2007. This year, at its current pace, the numbers are expected to increase drastically for a third year in a row.
