Money blog roundup week of Nov. 24
The Carnival of Personal Finance for Nov. 24 was hosted by Living Almost Large. Here are some of the posts you’ll find on all things financial:
- The Red Stapler Chronicles presents the 12 Days of Christmas During a Recession: “11 Sheriff Sales, 10 new soup kitchens, 9 Senate Hearings,…” Have a good laugh. We all need it.
- The Broke Family presents Couponing Series Part 1: “I honestly don’t waste any time other than buying 3 newspapers every Sunday.” Local readers can play that game. It is possible to get home delivery of two – if not three – different newspapers depending on where you live in Monroe County: Monroe, Detroit and / or Toledo. If you aren’t on a delivery route, go to a store that sells the Sunday newspapers inside.
- Budgets are Sexy presents So last night I hear that a neighbor was just foreclosed on: “It just sucks when you are a good little citizen and pay your dues on time and diligently, yet you lose thousands because of someone else’s mistakes!” Does this story sound familiar, local readers? Did you see that headline in today’s Monroe Evening News about home values?
The Festival of Frugality for Nov. 25 was hosted by Eco Joe’s. Here are some of the posts you’ll find on frugal living concepts:
- My Dollar Plan presents Black Friday 2008 Free Stuff: “One of my favorite things to do on Black Friday is score free stuff!” I know, not all of those stores listed are in Monroe. But several of them are. Be sure you verify any Black Friday offers against the actual ads for that location. Local readers – there is no Thanksgiving Day edition of The Monroe Evening News. You will find your holiday ads in Wednesday afternoon’s paper.
- Bargain Briana presents 7 ways to save on your holiday party: “Scour your recipe books to utilize the ingredients you have on hand.” This is why one should keep frequently used pantry items in good supply.
- The Greenest Dollar presents How to save money on laundry day: “If you do all your laundry on one day you can take advantage of the heat that’s already in the dryer when you transfer loads.” This post has a really good roundup of tips from soap to softener.

Thanks as always for all the great info. Last week we took the time to sort through all our pantry & freezer items. I buy extra flour when I get a deal & also store it in the freezer. I have 3 bags. So I can scratch that off my list. I also got out some old recipes from my grandmother & found some really cheap but tasty things to make. I also have been searching for sometime for a homemade laundry soap recipe. I tried the powder type but found I had to use 3 tablespoons & take the time to disolve it in warm water first. Finally after talking to a few other people online I tried the recipe at the Duggar family web site. It is great! I made 10gal. for a little less than $2.00. I did spend $5.00 for a nice 5gal. bucket with a tight fitting lid. But I can see the savings in a month. Now if I could just find a way to save on our second biggest expense, toilet paper. Happy holidays & again thanks.

Hmm… toilet paper is tricky. That’s one of those things where, to get the best prices, one is usually buying quite a bit at one time.
