Free tax filing services for low-income families

The Monroe County Opportunity Program has received funding from the Michigan Department of Human Services to perform free tax preparation services.

Eligible families are those who are residents of Monroe County, Mich., whose income are at or below 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines. This translates to:

  • 1 person: $20,800.
  • 2 people: $28,000.
  • 3 people: $35,200.
  • 4 people: $42,400.
  • 5 people: $49,600.
  • 6 people: $56,800.

To arrange for an appointment, call 241-2775. During the phone call, the clients will speak with a staff member who will review their eligibility and provide a list of documents that clients need to bring to the appointment.

I checked the phone number last night on the web, and called it this morning

734-241-2775 is the working number for Monroe County Opportunity Program. So if you live in Monroe County, Mich., try again.

If you’re checking in from another community, then call your United Way office and ask who is providing a similar service in your area. I keep a very local focus on my blog — there are a lot of tips and discussion of interest to national readers, but the specific details on my blog will always be for Monroe, Mich.
