Homemaker Barbi: Recession proof your pantry

Homemaker Barbie has this post: Recession-proof your pantry and food.

A snippet:

Is there the possibility of a layoff coming soon to your family?  Maybe you got uncertain news like my husband and I did, that your employer may be downsizing, and that a few employees will have to be laid off.  So what would we do if my husband lost his job? You can quickly and painlessly recession proof your family now with our easy step by step instructions.

Even if the worst-case scenario never comes true, you’ll still have extra money in the bank and the knowledge that you can have a great life on less.

The underlying concept is that you know how to save money on groceries. See Barbi’s instructions and go to my grocery sidebar for the Monroe, Mich., details such as who does double coupons and where you can buy groceries by the box.

Barbi then explains what items keep well in storage and why having frugal friends to socialize with can help.

I stock up on groceries when products we use are on sale, and that helps quite a bit during weeks when we’ve got a lot of bills to pay. If I already have hamburger and pasta, and need only a jar of spaghetti sauce to make a dinner, that’s a big help.

I live in a small house and there weren’t enough cabinets in the kitchen when we moved in. One of the first “home improvement” projects we did was have a contractor install two more cabinet sections. It’s still a tiny kitchen and the location that would be normally used as a pantry is the laundry closet.

Therefore my “pantry” is a bookshelf and a no-longer used computer desk set up in the basement where I can store canned vegetables, boxes of cereal, potatoes, oranges, bags of rice and beans.

You could also look to see whether a linen closet can be converted for pantry use. We use only part of the bathroom linen closet  for towels and washcloths. The rest of that space is where we store toilet paper, soap and toothpaste.
