Free pass to Sterling State Park @ your library

This post is for my readers who have a library card from Monroe County Library System of Monroe, Mich.:

The Monroe County Library System is participating in the Park and Read Program, which offers free passes to state parks and recreation areas.

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources has partnered with the Library of Michigan, Macy’s, and the Hammock Company for the “Park & Read” program. The promotion is intended to encourage people to relax with a favorite book at their local state parks.

Park & Read allows library-card holders to “check-out” a one-day pass into any Michigan state park or recreation area in lieu of the resident daily motor vehicle permit. This is a $6 savings and free access to the events taking place in parks this summer.

“We want everyone in Michigan to know what a fantastic resource their local park can be,” says Maia Stephens, Recreation Programmer for the DNR. “Because the program is free, everyone can now enjoy all the free activities available in Michigan State Parks and Recreation Areas.”

Passes are available at all Monroe County Library System branches and can be used for one day within a seven-day period at any one of Michigan’s state parks – including Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township. This program runs through Sept 25.

Is this offer valid for the fireworks show at Sterling State Park in July of 2009?

There was no fine print on the press release regarding the July 4 holiday weekend.

But if you do plan to use it for the fireworks show on Friday July 3, it would be smart to pick up a pass early in the week. I think a lot of people will have the same idea you do.

I just saw a news article that says the National Parks are having a “free” sale every weekend this summer. If you are in driving distance of one, check it out. This is being sent from the north woods area of Wisconsin!

My husband and I used the state park pass last night to have a picnic at the beach area. The library pass is a good way to check out the park if you are considering whether to get a season pass, or would only go once a year anyway.

Heads up if you are looking at this post on Friday July 3: All of the Monroe County Library System branches are closed today. If you do not already have your park pass from the library, you won’t be able to get one.

In the meantime, the discounts one can get on the annual passes are for Michigan residents age 65 and older and for those who have Michigan Bridge cards.

Just curious if you know how much an annual pass is for people that have the Bridge Card?
