Tips from Festival of Frugality of June 23

The Festival of Frugality for June 23 was hosted by Financial Highway. This week’s list is one of the best frugal blog roundups I’ve seen in awhile. Here are some of the posts you’ll find on frugal living concepts:

  • Fabulously Broke in the City presents The Three Levels of Frugality:  “You are not frugal whatsoever, but you think you are because you don’t really know what frugal means and just because you decided not to buy the Venti (large) sized coffee at Starbucks, but the Tall one (small) instead you think you’re being frugal.” This post is hilarious and is getting a lot of great comments!
  • My Two Dollars presents Cut your energy bill in half:  ” For small meals, use a small oven. And by that I mean use the toaster or convection oven instead of the full-sized oven, so you don’t have to heat up all that empty space.” I’m glad I have an oven, but it’s not used every day. I use my tabletop grill, slow-cooker or fry pan four or five times a week to cook dinner.
  • Wealth Pilgrim presents How to protect yourself from the financial insanity of others: I really don’t think that you can change someone else’s financial behavior. A better question is how to protect yourself when you are in a relationship with such folks.” Note: this post is a video clip. Setting boundaries for your own sake is a great tip, whether it is financial or otherwise.
  • Pay Less for Food presents Food storage tips that keep your hard-earned money out of the trash: “If you use a lot of freshly squeezed lemon juice, don’t throw out the excess juice or lemons. Just squeeze them into an ice cube tray.” I’ve been seeing lots of ice cube try tips lately, add this to your list!
  • Getting Ahead presents Frugal Living for Beginners: “You won’t know where to cut back if you don’t know where it is going to start with. It won’t take you long to figure out the areas you really need to work on.” If you live in Monroe County, Mich., and want something to compare your figures to, I worked up a sample household budget based on the median income and the cost of living in our area.
  • Mrs. Bankrupt presents Dorm-land Savings time: “Contact the student’s parents and see what they are providing.  Typically, the other parent is relieved to split expense. One of my kiddos had a roommate whose parents sent a fridge. We in turn, provided a microwave.” And a tip from a mom whose daughter’s college is 3 hours drive away: only pack what you can carry in one vehicle / car load. It will not be worth the gas money to haul stuff to campus that can be purchased in town, or can wait for the next trip home.
