How much does it cost to light the Christmas tree?

How much does it cost to light the Christmas tree or your outdoor display?

Consumers Energy in Michigan has calculated the cost in a press release that was sent this week to The Monroe Evening News and other media outlets.

“Holiday lights are a very affordable way for our customers to add cheer to businesses and neighborhoods during this special time of year,” Frank Johnson, Consumer Energy’s senior vice president of energy operations said in the notice.

Among the holiday trivia:

  • It costs about 6 cents to keep 300 icicle lights on for four hours.
  • It costs about 4 cents to light a Christmas tree with 200 miniature lights for four hours.
  • So the total cost for a simple display of one tree and a couple strings of outdoor lights is about $3 a month.

Pretty much that’s what our holiday decor is this year.

I’m not going to total up the cost of those mega-displays that some families do. You can figure that one out by adding up the number of lights you have and using this formula!

Paula, I’ve wondered if it is financially worth it to invest in higher priced, but more energy efficient strings of LED lights. We need to get new lights this year, and the discount store has them for $6.99 (if I recall correctly) for 50 ft length strings. Do you have any info on this?

One of my co-workers got LED lights this year and he’s pretty interested in the technology. If you found a price for $6.99 for an LED light string, keep in mind that regular strings are running about $3.50 on sale. So that’s not bad.
