Angel Food’s after-school boxes May 2010

So what are the After-School food boxes like at Angel Food Ministries?

That’s what I ordered this month. Actually, I ordered the After School fruit box in April; but this was the first time I ordered both the snack box and the fruit box.

Here’s the main “After School Box,” which is basically a snack and convenience food box. The cost was $24. Interesting assortment of stuff – not necessarily things I’d buy on my own except for the frozen pizzas. So I don’t know the cost comparison.

But the collection looked useful for lunch box or as eat-and-run items: baby corn dogs, graham sandwiches, peanut butter jamwiches, popcorn chicken, Moon Pies, heat-and-eat baby burgers. And my husband likes the AF fish sticks, so there’s a dinner item for us.

The after-school fruit box costs $16 and this is what I got. This box works out much better for us than the bigger fruit and veggie box. I have to really watch what is in the big box or we’ll never get around to eating it all.

In this case, the raisins are going to my snack drawer at work. The granola bars will be split up between my husband and I. The rest goes into the fruit basket and veggie crisper at home. I do like peanut butter with my apples and celery, so that was a good item to find in this box.

I also bought a chicken box this month, but Angel Food customers are familiar with the meat selections. The After School boxes are new.

For June I ordered both After School boxes again. My preference with Angel Food is to buy the “main selection” aka $30 boxes; but if that mix of items doesn’t work for us, I pick a box or two from the other selections. There are groceries I do like in the $30 June box; however, it’s stuff I’ve got more than plenty of at the moment.

I don’t want to get out of the habit of ordering from Angel Food because during the months I have skipped the program, I noticed gaps in my pantry and freezer inventory later. Supermarket sales and grocery coupon tricks only work so well on their own.

My lunch today: apple, celery pack and peanut butter.

My husband’s lunch: peanut butter jamwich and the graham cracker sandwich. He liked the jamwich. I told him I’d never buy that at the grocery store because it’s so expensive, so I’m glad he liked it.

I had the other graham cracker sandwich on Saturday and that was pretty good.
