$29 price and new selections at Angel Food

If you’ve been purchasing food from Angel Food Ministries, you know that the main grocery box has cost $30 during the past couple of years.

Angel Food reworked its budget and a new lower price has settled out. Starting in August, the main aka “signature box” will cost $29. There also are some good low-cost alternate selections on the August menu.

My tentative plan for August purchases is one basic box and one fruit and veggie box. I have purchased the After School box a couple of times, and those corn dogs and the graham wafers are pretty good. The gourmet chicken selections that are available in August also are very good.

But it’s time to aim my Angel Food purchases more to pantry items.

There are Angel Food distribution sites throughout southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. Here are the order details for the three sites in Monroe County, Mich.:

  • Bedford Church of the Nazarene, 7866 Douglas Rd., Lambertville: 10 a.m. to noon Sundays, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays. Onsite orders due Aug. 13, online orders due Aug. 17. Pickups are Aug. 21.
  • Dundee Assembly of God, 13790 South Custer Rd., Dundee: Office hours 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 19 and Aug. 21. Online orders due Aug. 22. Pickups are Aug. 28.
  • Monroe Church of the Nazarene, 3401 S. Custer Rd.: Office hours 10 to 11 a.m. July 17. Onsite orders due Aug. 14, online orders due Aug. 22. Pickups are Aug. 28.

Angel Food Ministries is a discount grocery purchase program that is open to anyone of any income level. Don’t you fuss that “Nobody helps working families like mine” until you try out this program. You can look up my Angel Food Ministries archives to see what I’ve bought and how the program works.

Grocery orders can be placed on line at www.angelfoodministries.com or bring cash, bank card or Michigan Bridge Card to the local sites on pickup days (for the following month’s orders) or during their office hours.

Paula, while the price of the signature box dropped $1, please note that the dessert has been pulled from the monthly box, along with one of the meats. There is an additional lb of ground beef listed as a “bonus.” A lot of chatter on FB has some, including myself, wondering if this “bonus” will be pulled in months to come. Produce box is also $1 less but there are also less items than in month’s past. Many would rather pay the additional $1 and continue to get more items, not less. One point brought up was that the price increase from $25 to $30 (before my participation began) was noted by AF as a response to over $4/gallon gas prices (although I assume diesel is the truck fuel of choice). Many are wondering just what is going on. AF also recently let 49 employees go. : (

Yes, Carol is right, there is a lot of chatter on facebook. I’ve heard about the layoffs. There also had been discussion on what the “new” price should be.

It’s pretty clear that Angel Food is trying to find a formula that works both on the organization side and for its customers. For example, one experiment this summer was a pork-free box.

When Angel Food was first available in Monroe County in summer 2007, the cost was $25 for the main box. My family had another option for cheap eats at that time, so we didn’t participate in AF until almost a year later and the cost of the main box was then $30.

There are other programs like this across the country. If there is one in your community, check it out.

Great Food for All, for example, is available elsewhere in Michigan and Ohio, but it’s no longer available for my local readers in the Monroe area. When both grocery programs were available locally, I told my readers to look at both menus and then make their picks for the month. Another tip I gave was to buy from both programs because the delivery dates were different and that would help balance out grocery expenses and inventory.

Has anyone heard if there are online coupons for the month of August? That new family four pack of meals looks yummy.
