An “old school” family holiday season idea that has made a huge comeback in recent years is the concept of an Advent calendar.

This is a day-by-day countdown from Dec. 1 to Dec. 25, in which the paper or wooden calendar includes a small gift, candy, story chapter, or Bible verse for the children to enjoy each day of the season. If this had been a trend when my daughter was little, I certainly would have done this for her.

Creekside Learning has an interesting spin on the tradition in that she came up with a list of secular Advent messages for families who have that preference.
